Rage Against The Machine's Lollapalooza Set Turns Ugly; Lupe Fiasco, Ting Tings, Wilco Play Day Two

RATM ask crowd to stop pushing, as fans without tickets add to chaos by hopping fence.

CHICAGO — There were busted barricades, bruised bodies and backflips on Saturday at Lollapalooza, though only two of those things occurred during Rage Against the Machine's set.

(See all our photos from Saturday right here.)

The agit-rock icons capped off the festival's second day with an incendiary, pummeling display of power that proved that they're still at the top of their game — though it probably wasn't Zack de la Rocha's screeds or Tom Morello's fret-bending guitarwork that people were talking about after the set. Instead, it was the ugly turn the night took shortly after RATM began their set.

The reunited group opened with a trio of their bombastic best, including "Testify" and "Bulls on Parade," setting off multiple circle pits in the crowd and sending a stream of bodies — which appeared to be equally comprised of crowd-surfers and panicked fans trying to escape the crush — over the barricade in front of the stage. By the third song, there was a steady, at times frenzied, rush by hundreds of fanson the east side of the stage attempting to leave the area. The relentless fury of the music, combined with the sense of chaos in the crowd, made for some tense moments. Concertgoers trying to go up a set of cement steps were pushed backwards or blocked from exiting as a bull rush of male fans barreled down the steps, knocking people over like dominoes.

The crowd surge got so bad that De la Rocha stopped the show on three separate occasions, pleading with fans to take a step back to avoid crushing the audience members up front, then introducing fist-pumping songs such as "Bullet in the Head." At another point during the set, Lollapalooza's head of security conferred with the members of the band and their team at the front of the stage.

There was also at least one reported security breach of the venue's perimeter fence, according to both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, resulting in an unknown number of fans without tickets rushing into the park and reportedly injuring some security personnel in the process. Spokespeople for the festival could not be reached for comment at press time, and a Chicago Police Department spokesperson said that officials had not received calls for help from the festival, despite multiple reports that police on horseback had responded to the fence breach.

Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said that as of 12:30 a.m. Sunday (August 3) his department had not received any calls for assistance from the private firm handling emergency services for the festival; MTV News is attempting to reach that firm. It was unknown at press time how many injuries occurred during the show, but an MTV reporter near the front of the stage witnessed at least a dozen dazed, limping and panicked fans being escorted to the medical tent, including one who was taken out on a backboard.

(Check out our Friday Lollapalooza recap here.)

It was an ugly and unfortunate end to what had been an otherwise idyllic day in Grant Park. The weather cooperated (sunny and breezy, not nearly as brain-melting as had been advertised), and the musical moments shone bright. The Ting Tings bleeped and shimmied in the early afternoon sun, MGMT were their usual psychedelic selves, and Explosions in the Sky coaxed grandeur out of their guitar pedals. Tyke rockers the Tiny Masters of Today blasted away on the Kidzapalooza stage (even working a protest song, "Bushy," into their set), Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings ground out an hour of pulse-quickening R&B, and Wilco jammed through a good-natured 90 minutes that took place at the same time all the Rage chaos was unfurling.

But the early part of Saturday belonged to Chicago's own Lupe Fiasco, who made a major statement on his third trip to Lollapalooza and emerged as a conquering hero, stepping way outside the shadow of mentor Kanye West, who closes Lolla on Sunday night. And he did it from the get-go.

Taking the stage to the theme from "Rocky" — performed by a fabulously funky nine-piece backing band that included bass, guitar, drums, DJ, three horns, backup singer, hype man and keyboard player - Lupe bobbed and weaved like a prize fighter but dressed like a futuristic Space Gentleman (in impeccable white and silver, down to his shining high-tops). He dropped to the floor to rip through some one-armed push-ups, sprang back to his feet, threw himself into an impressive backflip and welcomed the huge crowd to "Lupepalooza."

And he didn't let up from there. The band turned the normally lazy tempo of "Kick, Push" into an old '70s funk jam as Fiasco ran from one end of the stage to the other, stalking it with a super-sized confidence that surpassed the swagger he displayed at Lolla last year.

The ensemble was later augmented by a children's gospel choir, and during "Hip Hop Saved My Life," Fiasco copped a sly smile as he waved his hand in the air and thousands of converts followed suit. This was a man becoming, well, the man.

It was epic, it was grandiose, and it was all anyone could talk about ... until Rage, of course. Your move, Kanye.

T.I.'s lawyers gave a hint of how they plan to defend their client through motions filed in court on Monday seeking to suppress evidence seized from the rapper's vehicle during his October 13 arrest on federal weapons charges. The motions claim that the evidence against him and statements he made to authorities were illegally obtained. The Associated Press reports that attorneys for the rapper (born Clifford Harris) claim his car was searched without a warrant, consent or probable cause. They also claim that his detention might not have been appropriate, that statements he made to authorities might not have been voluntary and that agents may have failed to honor his rights. The motions don't go into details on the basis for the legal challenges, but state that more information will be filled in later. A judge had not made a ruling on the challenges at press time. ...

A judge suspended the driver's license of wrestler Hulk Hogan's son, Nick Bollea, for one year on Tuesday, in the wake of the 17-year-old's August crash that left his friend in critical condition, according to the AP. Bollea was arrested on November 7 on charges of reckless driving involving serious bodily injury, and the Tampa Tribune reported that the teen received a letter on Monday informing him of the suspension, as well as a letter ordering him to pay a fine for driving 106 mph before the crash, to avoid having his license suspended indefinitely. "We have the ability to suspend someone's license if we believe what they could be convicted of is a potential danger should this person remain on the road," said Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Ann Nucatola. "We've deemed him dangerous to the general public on the road." ...

The Cure's Robert Smith addressed rumors about him working with Ashlee Simpson in V magazine. "First of all, I was mostly shocked by how fantastically widespread that rumor was ... and by how quickly it spread," he said. "I know that people were really upset by the idea that I would do that and I suppose I can understand why, but it still seems so ridiculous to me. I took my nieces to see her perform in 'Chicago' on the West End and afterward they wanted to meet her, so we went backstage and said hello. I didn't understand what the big deal was. You can say what you want about her, but she can sing. Whether or not we'd actually do anything together, I don't know. I didn't see any reason to deny the rumor as I thought it was amusing and I never deny rumors anyway. There are a handful of singers that I'd rather pull my own fingernails out than be stuck in the same room with, but she isn't really one of them. We have no plans to collaborate, though. Believe it or not, she and I don't really run into each other. [He laughed.] Now, wait a second ... Ashlee is calling on my other line and I should probably take it." ...

According to the Florida Times-Union, former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle was arrested in St. John's County, Florida, on Monday, charged with failure to properly register as a sex offender. The 59-year-old, whose real name is Thomas Delmer Pyle, lives in Asheville, North Carolina. He was released from police custody Tuesday on $10,000 bail. Pyle pleaded guilty in 1993 to charges of attempted capital sexual battery by an adult on a victim younger than 12 and principal to lewd and lascivious on a child younger than 16. He was sentenced to eight years of probation and designated as a sex offender. His latest arrest stems from his recent attempt to renew his driver's license in Florida. Police claim he failed to register as a sex offender in Florida, which state law mandates, and detectives claim he has not lived at the address provided on his license renewal application for many years.

"I think that if that is what they need to do, or have to do, to have at it," Kaplan told UsMagazine.com. "I don't think it will, in any way, be a good expenditure of funds. But I can't stop that from happening." Kaplan also told the site that he doesn't think a P.I. would have much success following K-Fed around. "I don't think he would be concerned about it, and I don't think he has to change anything he is doing in order to address that," Kaplan said. ...

Kanye West got some cheery news from GQ magazine, which has named him one of the magazine's honorees for Men of the Year. West graces one of three separate covers for the mag, which also selected a former president (Bill Clinton) and James Bond himself (Daniel Craig) to keep the rapper company — not that he needs it. "I'm the number-one artist in the world right now. I'm the number-one human being in music," Kanye tells the mag. "That means any person who's living or breathing is number two. You are in the presence of a champion." Kanye also admits in his cover story that his feud with 50 Cent was his idea and a "complete publicity stunt." Also joining West, Clinton and Craig as honorees for the magazine's 12th annual list, which hits newsstands November 27 and can be found at the magazine's Web site, are Casey Affleck, Judd Apatow (along with his "comedy mafia" of Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera), Simon Cowell, Daft Punk, Tom Hanks, Emile Hirsch, Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke and Rihanna. Hey, guess who else didn't pay a dime for the new Radiohead album? Frontman Thom Yorke admitted to paying nothing for a download of In Rainbows during an interview with BBC 6. "There wasn't any point," he explained. "I just move some money from one pocket to the other." The release of the album online was a hard secret to keep, according to guitarist Ed O'Brien. On Tuesday (November 20), Nine Inch Nails released their Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D set, the last NIN album released by Interscope Records (fulfilling the band's contractual commitments to the label). In conjunction with the release, Trent Reznor was to launch the Web site Remix.NIN.com so fans could use the DVD-ROM contained within the LP — boasting all the source material in multi-track format — to do their own remixes of the songs, with Reznor's blessing. But when visitors reach the site, they'll find an image of an old man wearing glasses with $20 bills tucked behind each lens. In an essay on the site titled "Copyright Fun," Reznor explains the situation. He claims he was contacted over the weekend by Interscope, which owns the band's master files, and told the site wouldn't be happening. "Universal feels that if they host our remix site, they will be opening themselves up to the accusation that they are sponsoring the same technical violation of copyright they are suing companies [like YouTube and MySpace] for. Their premise is that if any fan decides to remix one of my masters with material Universal doesn't own — a 'mash-up,' a sample, whatever — and upload it to the site, they will be doing exactly what MySpace and YouTube are doing." The label said it would not host the remix site, insisting that the band host it, shifting the liability to Reznor. "We are challenged at the last second to find a way of bringing this idea to life without getting splashed by the urine as these media companies piss all over each other's feet," Reznor wrote. "We have a cool and innovative site ready to launch but we're currently scratching our heads as to how to proceed." ...

Fergie explains her infamous onstage pants-wetting episode in the December issue of Allure: She didn't want to disappoint her fans by being late. Peeing is one of my rituals before going onstage." Fergie also tells the magazine that she's concerned about certain starlets' privacy when they're trying to kick a habit. "The thing that appalls me is that when you get these stories from inside rehab. That's supposed to be your sanctuary," said the singer, who fought a crystal meth addiction herself. "I know we live in a voyeuristic world right now, but how are you supposed to get better when people are constantly leaking stories about you when you're in rehab? It's not conducive to healing." ...

Former Iced Earth guitarist Ernie Carletti was convicted Monday of kidnapping and rape, stemming from his abduction of a University of Delaware student back in 2003. According to AP, a Superior Court jury in Wilmington, Delaware, found the 32-year-old musician guilty on two counts of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree kidnapping; he was acquitted on a related weapons charge. Carletti admitted to abducting the student, shackling her arms and legs, and then hog-tying her at his Maryland home until she began crying. During the trial, he testified that he did not have a gun and did not rape the woman. "Maybe I wasn't thinking clearly," he said. "It was just part of the effect. I didn't say she wanted it, but she did not deny it." The victim testified last week that she was waiting for a ride in nearby Newark, Delaware, when a stranger forced her into his car at gunpoint. She was handcuffed, shackled and blindfolded, then was driven to the man's home. After she was raped, she was driven back to Newark and left tied and blindfolded on West Main Street. Carletti's fingerprints were discovered on duct tape used to bind the woman; he faces separate charges in an alleged sexual assault that occurred while he was in high school. He faces up to two life prison terms. His sentencing date has not been announced.

'Neil Young: Heart Of Gold': The Magic Of Music Made Visible, By Kurt Loder

A great singer and a great director make a pretty great concert doc.

Neil Young in "Neil Young: Heart of Gold"
Photo: Bob Vergara

No director approaches the subject of music, and the players who make it, with more respect and understanding than Jonathan Demme. Demme made one of the most mesmerizing of all rock concert documentaries — the 1984 Talking Heads feature, "Stop Making Sense" — and he directed one of the most likeable, too, with the 1997 "Storefront Hitchcock," a chronicle of a typically rambling show by the lovably eccentric English singer Robyn Hitchcock. He has also shot videos for Bruce Springsteen and the Feelies, and in 1991, the year Demme won an Oscar for "The Silence of the Lambs," he also produced an album called "Konbit," which is a compilation of Haitian music, in which he's something of an expert.

In 1994, Demme shot a short in-the-studio film about Neil Young and his band, Crazy Horse, called "The Complex Sessions." (Young had been nominated for an Oscar himself for the title song he wrote for Demme's 1993 AIDS movie, "Philadelphia.") So when the director got back together with his old friend to film two concerts that Young performed in Nashville last August, the result was pretty much guaranteed to be an unusually affecting film. And it is.

Last year was a turbulent period for Young. In March, the then-59-year-old singer was diagnosed as having a brain aneurysm, which was successfully removed (not a moment too soon) during an operation in a New York City hospital. Between the diagnosis and the operation, new musical ideas had begun coming to him, so he had flown to Nashville, begun writing songs in a studio, and gathered together some of the city's most celebrated session musicians to record them. These songs — reflections on mortality and reminiscences of times long gone — now make up the bulk of Young's new album, Prairie Wind.

In June, Neil's father, the noted Canadian sportswriter and author Scott Young, died at the age of 87. On August 19, Young debuted his new songs in two concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. (The Ryman, a venue built entirely of wood, is prized for its warm acoustics. "It's like a big guitar," Young says.) Demme filmed both shows, and the resulting picture is a loving contemplation of the magic of live musical performance.

"Heart of Gold" isn't quite like any other concert movie. There are no frantic edits, no showy montages, no swooping pans across a cheering audience. (In fact, the audience isn't even shown.) The picture was shot entirely with long-range lenses, which means there were no cameramen scurrying around the stage to distract the musicians. The performances move forward in long, serene takes, and the result is a film that focuses completely on the playing and singing. The musicians' empathic interaction is revelatory.

There is a trio of backup vocalists in the ensemble (including Young's wife, Pegi), and three horn players, and a string section that includes six Stradivarius violins. (More resonant wood.) A gospel choir, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, also chimes in occasionally. For the most part, though, we are watching a band, composed of incredibly fine musicians, that is effortlessly working together, warmly responding to one another's playing like the old friends they actually are. We see the great Spooner Oldham, a grizzled presence on piano and organ, and he doesn't seem to be doing anything — there's no body language. But when we listen carefully (the sound mix is gorgeously detailed), we hear his rich chord inversions and his subtle, almost off-hand fills, and we realize the song wouldn't be anything like the same without him. This would also have to be said of drummer Chad Cromwell, who crisply hits every rhythmic accent without once overplaying, and of the bassist, Rick Rosas, who (you really have to see this) anchors the entire sound playing solely, and very simply, with his thumb.

The band is led by the steel guitarist Ben Keith, who first played with Young more than 30 years ago, on the singer's Harvest album (which was also partly recorded in Nashville). Keith doesn't seem to be doing much either (Demme says he looks at some points like he's nodding off), but his sliding chords move through the music with intuitive finesse, and when he steps in for a solo, it's a compact, slashing marvel that would leave most six-string guitarists slack-jawed.

Young himself is playing his 1941 Martin D28 — a guitar that once belonged to Hank Williams, who used to play it in this very building. ("I'm glad to see it back here," the singer says, lifting a hand toward heaven.) He seems relaxed and happy, but as he makes his way through haunting new songs like "When God Made Me" and, especially, "Falling Off the Face of Earth," you know he's experienced some things recently that have left a mark that will never be erased.

He does a number of older songs, too ("I Am a Child," "Harvest Moon," a cover of Ian and Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds"), and they fit right in with the set's sometimes elegiac tone — in particular, a solo rendition of the brilliant, mournful "The Needle and the Damage Done." If some of this sounds like heavy going, it never is — the music is infused with a spirit that's unmistakably related to rock and roll. (Young actually power-chords a banjo at one point, to remind you of what a genius he is.)

The performances so beautifully captured in this movie are a glowing embodiment of American vernacular music — strains of country, folk and rock twine through the proceedings as if no borders of style or fashion had ever forced them apart. You come away from the picture feeling as if you'd learned something new about the wonder of music, and maybe the human spirit, too. There can't be a much higher recommendation for seeing it.

Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, More Play To Screaming Tweens At Jingle Ball

John Mayer, Kris Allen, Jordin Sparks, Jay Sean, Owl City, Pitbull, Boys Like Girls, Ke$ha and the Fray take the stage at New York's Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK — As the lights went down at Z100's Jingle Ball on Friday night, giant screens played a countdown video instructing the nearly sold-out crowd to scream. These teens and tweens needed no encouragement. They screamed for each new act, for Taylor Swift and John Mayer, for Kris Allen and Pitbull, for Boys Like Girls and Jordin Sparks and the Fray.

But at Madison Square Garden, the evening indisputably belonged to pint-size pop-throb Justin Bieber. When the 15-year-old limped onstage in a walking cast to join Sparks for "No Air," the crowd disgorged a collective shriek so deafening it needs to be harnessed by peacekeeping agencies to be used for crowd-control purposes.

If Bieber was the King of the Ball, Swift was its regal Queen. Though she was slated to close out the show with a 15-minute set, the country superstar showed up earlier in the night. As Boys Like Girls hit the midway point of their opening mini-set, Swift arrived for a joint performance of their single, "Two Is Better Than One."

As was the case for the entire night, even if the audience didn't know the words to every song, they sure knew nearly every chorus and went wild at each one's arrival. Yet the problem with these types of shows is the frequent, energy-sucking breaks that occur every third or fourth song as the stage is reset for the next act. Commercials for shampoo, candy bars and text-messaging services played overhead, as the tweens got restless and took to sending in texts (pearls of wisdom like, "Justin ur soooo cute!!!") that flashed on the screen.

Swift reappeared later in the evening alongside John Mayer for their collaboration, "Half of My Heart," off his new Battle Studies album. Left alone onstage, Mayer then busted into a cover of Cream's blues-rock classic, "Crossroads," which seemed to confound the audience, who headed en masse for a strategically timed bathroom break.

"I'm John Mayer, I'm 52 years old," he laughed afterwards. "Get the old dude off the stage and get Justin Bieber on here!"

Mayer stayed for one more tune — "Say" — before heading away. A few more false Bieber alarms later, the teen singer arrived for his set around 10:20 p.m. From the floor seats to the nosebleeds, tweens shook, jumped, grabbed one another's hands. As white flames shot up around him, Bieber opened with "Love Me," followed by "One Less Lonely Girl," during which he serenaded a rather stunned girl onstage clutching a bouquet of red roses. He then brought out the acoustic guitar for "Favorite Girl" and welcomed Usher out for the elder singer's "U Got It Bad." Bieber finished up with "One Time."

"American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert appeared next, accompanied by both cheers and catcalls, to introduce Swift for her set. Wearing a silvery dress and thrashing her blond locks from side to side, the singer moved from the piano to the guitar to a lone mic as she closed out the show with tunes like "You Belong With Me," "Teardrops on My Guitar," "Fifteen" and "Love Story."

"It is an honor and a privilege to stand onstage at Madison Square Garden," she said.

But by the final numbers, as the clock pushed past 11 p.m., people were already streaming toward the exits, and those still in their seats had long since given up shouting and jumping in favor of sitting and politely clapping.

The show had been on for three and a half hours. Ke$ha kicked things off with her hit single "Tik Tok." Boys Like Girls announced that even if the audience hated them, everyone should hug one another as they began "The Great Escape." The ever well-dressed Pitbull came on for a rousing set including "Move Shake Drop" and "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)."

After an intro by fellow "Idol"-er Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen appeared for his set: "Can't Stay Away," Kanye West's "Heartless" (including a quick segue into "Gangsta's Paradise") and "Live Like We're Dying."

Allen was followed by Owl City and his classical quartet-assisted "Fireflies" and then Jay Sean's set, including "Down" and a sort of live, beat-box-driven remix of songs from other artists like Swift and Sparks. The Fray's set went heavy on the fog machines for songs like "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "How to Save a Life." Before she was joined by Bieber, Sparks sang "One Step at a Time," "S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)" and an a cappella Christmas song (first night of Hanukkah notwithstanding).

It wasn't just musicians who received serious love from the MSG crowd. "Twilight" star Peter Facinelli came out to greet the concertgoers and requested they quiet their screams so he could make his artist introduction in character as vampire Carlisle Cullen. "This is the most incredible night — my very first Jingle Ball," he said. "Let's hear some noise for John Mayer!"

Coldplay Working On A Concept Album

Follow-up to Viva la Vida doesn't yet have a release date or title.
By Gil Kaufman

One of the endearing quirks of Coldplay is that, despite their slow march to worldwide rock stardom over the past decade, they've remained self-deprecating and firmly focused on writing expansive pop songs without falling into the trap of trying to become "important."

But in the sessions for their fifth album, the follow-up to the smash 2008 hit Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, singer Chris Martin and his band are finally taking the dreaded "CA" plunge — as in "concept album."

"It's from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost," Martin told BBC News about the Brian Eno-produced disc. "Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together."

After exploring the high-minded issues of love and war on the Grammy-winning Viva la Vida, Martin promised that the new disc will be more intimate and more worldly. "It's a concept album, but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework. Does that make sense?" he said.

Working again with Eno (David Bowie, U2), Martin said the band is leaning on the producer and Roxy Music co-founder to once more push them to explode their sound. "Brian is the sower of seeds and ideas and experimenting, which is very liberating. Then [collaborator] Marcus [Dravs]' job is to come in after all that's been done and try and sculpt it into some kind of releasable format."

They've been working on the album for more than a year, during sessions that the BBC described as "chaotic," which left Coldplay with a number of half-formed and half-completed tracks. Martin said the group spent a year "making a lot of noise" that now needs to be sorted out and formed into actual songs.

There's no release date scheduled for the yet-untitled disc, but fans will get a brief glimpse at Coldplay later this month when they play a pair of sold-out gigs for the U.K. homeless charity Crisis.

"I think it will be good for us to get our gig feet on for a couple of days because sometimes you can get very institutionalized in the studio," Martin said. "There's a danger that you forget that you're going to have to play this for people and that's when music can become a little bit silly."

They've also released the Yuletide single "Christmas Lights" to tide their fans over. The plaintive piano ballad about a holiday lover's spat is accompanied by a whimsical performance video set on a colorful stage in the middle of a twinkling sea of lights.

Are you excited for Coldplay to get conceptual on their upcoming album? Let us know in the comments!

Ting Tings Bring The Thunder To Brooklyn Concert -- Literally

'It would be kind of dramatic if there's lightning,' singer Katie White muses before gig.
By Megan Warner, with reporting by John Norris

BROOKLYN, New York — "It looks like there might be thunder," Ting Tings frontwoman Katie White said, standing at the edge of McCarren Park Pool. "It would be good — kind of dramatic if there's lightning. And it might fill the pool up!"

There was no full pool — but there was plenty of thunder, lightning and rain throughout the afternoon at the Jelly NYC Pool Party. Regardless, Sunday's free concert was packed to capacity — the line to get in stretched around the block and hundreds were turned away from the venue, even after waiting for as long as three hours in the rain. But that didn't stop the Ting Tings from playing punchy, poppy hits from their debut LP, We Started Nothing, like "Shut Up and Let Me Go," "Great DJ" and "That's Not My Name" for lyric-chanting fans.

A storybook success story, (check out our literal storybook tale of their journey from "FNMTV"), the British duo give the Internet and TV a lot of credit for their #1 album in the U.K. and growing fanbase in the U.S.

"With stuff like MySpace your music travels so quickly," White said. "If somebody likes it they tell their friend. It's a good thing, though, that people actually want to see us."

Of course, the group's popularity owes more than a little to the iPod ad that features them. "We've been playing for, like, three or four days now here and it's all sold out," said the other half of the Ting Tings, Jules De Martino. "And I guess that's because the ad has been around and it got people to check us out."   While their single "Shut Up and Let Me Go" has become a hit and is among the many contenders for a VMA nomination for Best Pop Video, White thinks other songs on their album are even better.

"We've got just naturally popular songs," he said. "We haven't even unleashed our best songs on them yet, so I can't wait!"

The Ting Tings will continue their busy tour schedule, but they are also looking forward to getting back into the studio, especially for a new collaboration in the works with rapper Dizzee Rascal.

"He did a cover of one of our tracks on the radio in the U.K. and then we met him at [the Glastonbury festival] and we talked about it," De Martino said. "We're just looking for some space so we can get into the studio and bang something out."

The Ting Tings say they're hoping to film their next music video in the States after their tour. In the meantime, they're enjoying their growing U.S. popularity.

"People are just starting to discover us at such a fast rate here," De Martino said. "It's a lovely place for us to be at the moment."

Avril Lavigne, who was once known as the "anti-Britney," now has nothing but sympathy for the pop star, as she reveals in the new issue of Maxim. "No one else has it as hard as Britney," she told the magazine. "I feel bad for her. How does she even think with all those flashbulbs? When I'm being followed, everything's thrown off. They run red lights. They cause accidents. She can't even walk to her car. F---ing stalkers." Lavigne, who has been known to flip off and spit on the paparazzi in the past, also said she's disgusted at speculation that she's pregnant with her first child. "Remember in high school when people would start fake rumors about you?" she asked. "Well, this isn't high school. It's like, the entire world." Check out more Avril photos from the mag's March issue at Maxim.com. ...

A Los Angeles judge decided Thursday (February 14) to extend the temporary conservatory powers that Britney Spears' father has over the singer's affairs — at least through the next hearing, on March 10. Jamie Spears had been granted control to oversee Britney's well-being and her estate earlier this month, along with co-conservator Andrew Wallet. Court-appointed investigator Samuel Ingham told the court Thursday that he had not finished his psychological evaluation of the singer and was granted an extension until the next hearing. Also by March 10, Britney must undergo a 730 evaluation to study her family to determine the best custody arrangements, Commissioner Reva Goetz decided. Goetz also named Britney's older brother, Bryan — who used to work on her former management team — along with New York estate attorney Ivan Taback as co-trustees for the singer's trust while she is considered unable to manage her own affairs. Meanwhile, Britney's current manager Sam Lutfi has yet to be served with a restraining order. The lawyers for the conservatorship concluded that Lutfi was intentionally avoiding being served because they'd already spent over 200 hours trying to reach him. A hearing about the restraining order is scheduled for February 22. ...

Beyoncé's father, Mathew Knowles, isn't too happy about Aretha Franklin scolding his daughter for comments she made about the Queen of Soul at Sunday's Grammy Awards. "Something this ridiculous — it's childish, it's unprofessional," he said in a statement on Thursday, according to People. "And it's a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word 'king,' 'queen,' 'prince' or 'princess.' " Beyoncé introduced Tina Turner as "the queen" during the ceremony, after which Franklin released a statement in which she said, "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé. ... However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy." ...

Well, so much for all those reunion tours. A day after Billboard.com reported that the Police would be retiring for good after their upcoming North American trek comes news that the reunited Spice Girls likely won't go on either. Geri Halliwell — or Ginger Spice, to the fans — told the site she isn't anticipating a follow-up to the group's current run, which ends February 26 in Toronto. "It probably won't happen ever again," she said. "I'm still absolutely blown away that we did more than one show. So right now I'm thinking this is it. This is the last time you will ever get to see this Girl Power, the five Spices on the stage as one." Still, she added the requisite nugget of wisdom: "You can never say never." ...

According to The Boston Globe, the settlement is linked to Clear Channel's WHJY-FM, which ran ads for the show, where station DJ Michael Gonsalves was killed after introducing the band onstage. "We continue to be deeply saddened by the tremendous harm suffered by the victims, their families and the community as a result of this tragic fire," Andy Levin, chief legal officer of Clear Channel Communications, said in a written statement. "While Clear Channel had no role in causing or contributing to this fire, we are pleased to resolve these claims and, hopefully, contribute in some way to a sense of resolution for the affected victims and their families." Britney Spears' San Francisco Show Was 'Hella Hot,' Fans Say

'It was stunning,' says one fan who flew in from Alaska to see concert set to air Tuesday on 'Good Morning America.'

SAN FRANCISCO — Britney Spears turned the heat all the way up on Sunday morning (March 27), when she hit the stage at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco for a concert set to air on "Good Morning America." Her set list was similar to the one she followed just days earlier at a Las Vegas performance at the Palms Casino.

Fans will get to see her show when it airs Tuesday on "GMA" — the same day her Femme Fatale album drops — but the ones who were lucky enough to catch her on Sunday couldn't stop gushing about how "amazing" Brit was.

"So I totally loved how her bustier was lit up," Corina Andrati excitedly told MTV News moments after Spears wrapped her three-song set. "I'm so blessed to be here, and it's all about San Francisco."

Sarah added that Spears was as good as she was when her debut album dropped more than a decade ago. "It was amazing," she gushed. "It was so hot! We live here in the city, and she was sexier than ever and I'd go lesbian for her. She really blew it up."

"It was amazing," José added. "My favorite song was 'Till the World Ends' and I love the album and she's rocking it."

Randi Florence will now always remember her first-ever concert-going experience as a Britney Spears show. "We loved the show," Florence said. "It was my very first concert. I loved Britney. She's so amazing."

Sasha Yung shared her biggest highlight from the show. "I liked the last song, ['Till The World Ends']," she told us. "I liked the wind blowing through her hair and I loved her scandalous outfit."

Thomas loved that he's one of the first to experience hearing a new Femme Fatale track live. "I have to say the premiere of 'Big Fat Bass' [was great]," he said. "It was an amazing song and I loved the way she has it choreographed. It was stunning for me. I flew all the way from Alaska to go to this show, so I was inspired. It was awesome."

"It was freakin' sick, honestly," Monica said. "She's hot and everyone who hates on her: whatevs! She's hella hot!"

Bottom line for Alicia is that Britney proved once again that she's a true performer. "Great costumes! She looks better than ever," she said. "She can put on a show. When you go to a Britney show, you know you're going to get your money's worth, and today was no different."

Jay-Z, Coldplay Join Forces For Private New Year's Gig

Old pals will perform to celebrate opening of Las Vegas hotel.

Jay-Z has clearly adopted the "go big or go home" philosophy when it comes to his live shows. After wrapping up the epic Home and Home series of gigs with Eminem in Detroit and New York, Jigga is planning another major concert for New Year's Eve.

According to The Associated Press, Jay will hook up with musical pals Coldplay for a private, invitation-only show celebrating the opening of Las Vegas' Cosmopolitan hotel. Both acts are reportedly getting hefty paychecks for the gig, which will feature solo performances from each and a joint mash-up set at night's end.

The concert will be broadcast on the hotel's 65-foot marquee overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. The show is part of a three-day party that will take place two weeks after the new $3.9 billion resort opens its doors. Though a complete lineup hasn't been announced yet, a spokesperson for the resort said the celebration weekend also will feature surprise performances on the Cosmopolitan's pool deck, which looks out over Las Vegas Boulevard.

The pairing of the rapper and the alternative rockers isn't as strange as it may seem, especially considering that Jay is friends with Coldplay singer Chris Martin, and the two have collaborated on several occasions. Most recently, Martin popped up last week at one of the Home and Home shows in New York to sing the hook on "Heart of the City." In addition, they previously traded cameos on Coldplay's "Lost+" and Jay's "Beach Chair," and back in 2008, the two acts not only shared a bill in England, but also had their music weaved together by mixtape veterans Mick Boogie and Terry Urban on the Viva La Hova project, a 19-track mash-up that laid Jay's flow over Coldplay's atmospheric rock.

Who is your favorite Jay-Z collaborator? Talk about it in the comments!

The Grey Album mastermind Danger Mouse, Detroit garage rockers the Von Bondies and New York hipsters the Walkmen are among the latest crop of artists to join Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips on this summer's Lollapalooza lineup.

Alongside other previously announced artists the String Cheese Incident, Modest Mouse, Le Tigre, Gomez, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Polyphonic Spree (see "Lollapalooza's Farrell Explains His Taste For String Cheese"), the trek will also showcase the talents of Broken Social Scene, the Datsuns, Bumblebeez 81, the Secret Machines, the Thrills, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Elbow, Wheat and the lone hip-hop artists on the bill thus far, the Coup.

Lollapalooza founder and organizer Perry Farrell will also be on hand, performing as his electronic-music alter ego, DJ Peretz, at each stop. Additional artists are expected, and not all artists will perform at every stop.

The two-day package tour kicks off July 14 and 15 at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington. Tickets for the July 17 and 18 shows at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, outside of San Francisco, go on sale Sunday.
