O'Brien quotes a friend close to the singer, saying ultimately, the rapper's friends quashed the fling. "She was going out with him," one of Madge's friends said. "But homegirls were saying to [2Pac], 'I can't believe you're going out with a white girl.' " Madonna was then subsequently dumped, according to the book. ...

In an August 20 deposition Anderson said he lied about the alleged police involvement as part of a scam involving the slain rapper's family members and attorneys to win a monetary settlement from the city. Tom Waits, Robert Wilson To Team On Another Opera

Tom Waits

After enjoying one of the more successful years of his career in 1999, wizened songwriter Tom Waits has lined up a series of new projects, including one which will see him re-team with theater director Robert Wilson.

According to "Variety," Waits and wife Kathleen Brennan plan to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark in the next few weeks to meet with Wilson and start work on a contemporary opera entitled "Woyzeck."

The libretto for "Woyzeck" centers around the true story of a mentally disturbed German soldier who murdered his wife in 1821 after discovering her affair with another soldier. "Woyzeck" is scheduled to debut on November 14 at Denmark's Betty Nansen Theater.

Wilson, Waits, and Brennan previously collaborated on a pair of avant-garde operas, "The Black Rider," which was co-written by William S. Burroughs, in 1990, and "Alice," an update of the "Alice In Wonderland" faerie tale, in 1993.

Wilson teamed up with another modern music legend, Lou Reed, in 1996 to create "Time Rocker," an opera loosely based on H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" which completed the dramatic trilogy begun with "Alice."

Waits enjoyed a critical and commercial success with 1999's "Mule Variations," his first new album since 1993, and is planning to follow up "Variations" with another LP, tentatively set to be released by Epitaph Records later this year.

Man Found Dead At Bonnaroo Festival; Police Await Autopsy Results

Friends of David Ottman said he suffered from a breathing disorder.

The body of a 32-year-old Huntsville, Alabama, man was discovered on Saturday morning at the site of this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, marring the fourth-annual weekend-long event's otherwise celebratory mood. According to a report in the Huntsville Times, police identified the man as David Ottman, the son of a former Huntsville police chief; an official cause of death has not been determined, pending the results of an autopsy.

Hospital officials told The Associated Press that Ottman's friends informed them that he suffered from sleep apnea, a medical disorder in which the throat passage is narrow and becomes blocked by the throat muscles when they relax, cutting off the supply of oxygen. Police officials said no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found at Ottman's campsite Saturday morning, and there were no apparent signs of trauma.

Emergency medical personnel tried to revive Ottman but, according to one hospital worker, "He was already pretty blue by the time we got on the scene. So he had probably been dead for a while."

Ottman's was the only reported death during this year's Bonnaroo event, which attracted more than 75,000 fans (see "Bonnaroo Kicks Out The Jams Thanks To Dave Matthews, John Mayer — And Bo Bice"). Two festival-goers died last year of apparent overdoses — a first for the festival, launched back in 2002 (see "Two Fans Die At Bonnaroo Music Festival"). Bonnaroo organizers hired additional emergency personnel for this year's outing.

Held over the weekend in Manchester, Tennessee, the festival featured performances by the Dave Matthews Band, former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, Modest Mouse, the Mars Volta, Jack Johnson, the Black Crowes and others (see "Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band Top Bonnaroo 2005 Bill").

Shakira Opens EMA Show With Dizzee Rascal

Madrid crowd goes crazy for 'Loca' and 'Waka Waka.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Dizzee Rascal and Shakira perform at the 2010 EMA on Sunday
Photo: Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

The 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards got off to a crazy start, courtesy of a performance from hip-swiveling superstar Shakira.

The Colombian megastar opened the show with her Sale el Sol single "Loca," rallying the crowd with her signature undulating moves. Flanked by two dancers, Shakira hit the Madrid stage in a silvery bra top and fringed harem pants under neon lights. Then British grime rapper Dizzee Rascal joined the singer for his verse on the English version of the track, rocking a simply sleek black jacket and white T-shirt, and getting the crowd amped.

After "Loca," Dizzee retreated backstage as Shakira launched into her global World Cup anthem "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)," a suitable choice for an award show staged in the nation of the world soccer champs. The Spaniards showed their pride throughout the percussion-heavy jam, as mammoth flags rose from various points in the audience, and were waved above the crowd. Swirls of confetti rained on the crowd as Shakira wrapped up her high-energy set.

Her collabo with Dizzee is just one of several brushes with hip-hop the singer has explored in recent years. Shakira told MTV News in 2009 that she was trying to broaden her musical horizons by hooking up with rap artists.

"I'm never going to be a hardcore hip-hop singer," she said. "I come from Colombia, but I think music today ... it's about bringing elements that belong to different universes, even though they're opposed or similar, and making them exist in this big melting pot that the world is today. The world has shrunk, and we're just a big neighborhood, and it's kind of cool."

Shakira's set was the first in a night packed with performances from some of the world's biggest stars. Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Kings of Leon, B.o.B, Ke$ha, Bon Jovi and more all will grace the EMA stage. The night is hosted by "Desperate Housewives" diva Eva Longoria.

The 2010 EMAs air on MTV2 on Sunday (November 7) at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Jordin Sparks Recalls Meeting Britney Spears At 2008 VMAs

Sparks remembers being too awestruck to talk to her future tourmate.

Before last September, Jordin Sparks had never been to the VMAs and had never met current tourmate Britney Spears. So, when she found out she was seated near Spears at the 2008 Video Music Awards, she knew it was her chance to speak up and have some time with the star.

First, she had to get over being nervous to be in the very presence of Britney. "Well, I didn't say anything," Sparks told MTV News. "I [didn't] know what to say, 'cause it was her big comeback thing. She was nominated for however many [awards], and she looked beautiful, and I was like, 'Aaah!' "

Though she was starstruck, Jordin couldn't help but feel a little jealous when Britney's "Piece of Me" beat her "No Air" in the Best Female Video category last year. "She did [beat me], and I was very sad," she said. "I was like, come on, she already has three of them, at least give me one."

But Sparks' mother wasn't about to allow her to miss the opportunity to meet the pop princess. "My mom had to ask her for a picture," the "Idol" winner admitted. "My mom was with me, 'cause I couldn't do it. I was like, 'Mom, I cannot ask her for this picture.' "

Sparks said Spears at first seemed reluctant to take the photo. "Then Larry [Rudolph], who is her manager, was like, 'She's on your label; you're going to want to take the picture.' And I was like, 'Cool!' " she said. "And I understand too because she wanted to sit and watch. But we got to take the picture!"

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Additional celebrity presenters and performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.

Blink-182's Hits, Santana's All Are No Match For Now 20

Chart-topping compilation features Missy Elliott, Fall Out Boy, Kelly Clarkson and more.
By Chris Harris

Now That's What I Call Music! 20
Photo: Utv Records

With 1999's Supernatural, an album featuring duets with Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas, and Eric Clapton, among others, iconic guitarist Carlos Santana stumbled upon an award-winning, cash-culling formula: Recruit some of music's biggest names, and record tracks with them. Santana's Supernatural, which has gone on to sell more than 11.5 million copies, was followed by 2002's Shaman, which debuted as Billboard's #1 with close to 300,000 in first-week sales; that album included guests Dido, Macy Gray, Seal and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.

Sticking with that blueprint for success, Carlos Santana once again collected a handful of hitmakers for his latest outing, All That I Am, which features Michelle Branch, Outkast's Big Boi, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, Joss Stone, Metallica's Kirk Hammett and "American Idol" runner-up Bo Bice. The ingredients were all there for All That I Am's chart-topping debut, and with sales of more than 142,000, Santana gave it the old college try. But the producers behind the unstoppable retail force known as the Now That's What I Call Music! series drafted some equally imposing all-stars for the 20th installment in the best-selling compilation franchise.

According to the latest SoundScan totals, Now 20, which boasts tracks from Missy Elliott, Black Eyed Peas, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, the Pussycat Dolls, Ciara, Destiny's Child, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy and others, crushed Santana to take Billboard's #1, with week-one sales of close to 378,000. But Carlos shouldn't take the defeat too hard — few can top the consistently successful Now collections when it comes to chart debuts.

Santana and the wow of Now aside, it was a frail week at retail for chart newcomers. This week's Billboard totals reflect the advent of the holiday-shopping season, as the chart is riddled with greatest-hits collections released in droves toward the tail end of the year. This week, Blink-182's Greatest Hits debuts at #6 with close to 72,000 copies sold, while Slipknot's 9.0: Live, which is loaded with live renditions of some of the mask-donning metal band's most powerful tracks, opens at #17 with 42,000 plus scans.

John Fogerty's The Long Road Home: The Ultimate John Fogerty/ Creedence Collection debuts at #13 with 47,000 copies sold. Sliver: The Best of the Box, a collection of unreleased Nirvana tracks and a sampling of tunes issued via last year's With the Lights Out box set, debuts at #21 on the chart, selling more than 38,000 units. Ozzy Osbourne's Under Cover, an album of classic rock covers (several of which first appeared on Ozzy's Prince of Darkness box set), debuts at #134, with nearly 9,000 in sales.

A number of previously released hits discs also experienced a surge in sales this week — most notably, Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits, which takes #60 with more than 17,000 copies sold thanks to an 18 percent increase in retail interest, and Hilary Duff's Most Wanted, in at #52 with 20,000 scans reflecting an 11 percent sales spike.

As for the chart's top 10, Nickelback's All the Right Reasons holds strong at #3 with sales of close to 101,000 while the Black Eyed Peas, who are dominating airwaves with the single "My Humps," finish at #4 with 86,000 in sales for their latest, Monkey Business. Destiny's Child's #1's falls four spots to #5 with week-two scans of 85,000, while Martina McBride's Timeless takes the #7 spot with sales of 63,000 and change. Wherever You Are, the latest from Christian rockers Third Day, debuts at #8 with nearly 63,000 copies flying off record-store shelves, followed at #9 by Rod Stewart's Thanks for the Memory ... The Great American Songbook, Volume IV, which sold 62,000 copies. Ashlee Simpson's I Am Me rounds out the top 10 with sales of 54,000.

Other notable debuts on this week's chart include former Phish-erman Trey Anastasio's Shine, which opens at #64 with 16,000 copies sold, and Imogen Heap's Speak For Yourself, which debuts at #182 with 6,000 in sales.

Jimmy Page, Jack White And The Edge Open Up In 'It Might Get Loud'

Guitar legends talk about inspiration and songwriting in new documentary.
By Eric Ditzian

Jack White in "It Might Get Loud"
Photo: Sony Classics

Halfway through the hard-charging new rock documentary, "It Might Get Loud," Jimmy Page throws on an old, crackling record, closes his eyes and starts jamming on an imaginary guitar. For a few seconds, despite his silvery ponytail and the fact that he was the lead guitarist for arguably the greatest rock band ever, the 65-year-old could be any kid in any bedroom, giving himself over to the pure pleasure of music. After all these years, all those stadium concerts and all those millions of albums sold, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page still plays the freakin' air guitar.

It is a sublime moment in a documentary filled with such rare glimpses into the private passions and public music of three generations' worth of venerated lead guitarists — Jack White of the White Stripes, the Edge of U2 and Page — each of whom have highly distinct — and at times oppositional — musical styles, yet share the same undying, irrepressible love for the electric guitar.

But that, as director Davis Guggenheim told MTV News during a recent interview, is the exactly the point of the documentary. "Every generation comes up in rebellion of the next generation," he said. "Led Zeppelin rebelled against these pretty-boy pop bands. U2 came up hating the big-hair stadium bands. And the White Stripes were saying, 'We don't like this overproduced, stadium-band sound.' A lot of times you express your rebelliousness with an electric guitar."

Somehow Guggenheim managed to corral these three guys into a warehouse for two days to chat and play together. Interspersed with this epic jam-session are the times when Guggenheim followed the artists around with a camera, getting them to tell stories about childhood epiphanies, professional struggles and the zig-zagging path toward rock stardom. We see White constructing a makeshift guitar out of a wooden plank and a Coke bottle, then wailing away as the cows on his Tennessee farm look on; the Edge visiting the school of his youth and pointing out the concrete slab on which U2 first performed as teenagers; and Page, who avoided any type of on-camera interview for decades but ends up giving Guggenheim a candid tour of the estate where Zeppelin recorded in the '70s and where drummer John Bonham overdosed at the age of 32.

How did the director pull this whole thing together, convincing these ego-heavy lead guitarists, in need of neither money nor exposure, to hang out with each other for a couple days — to open up about what motivates them to write songs? Maybe it had something to do with Guggenheim's last documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" — an Oscar-winning investigation into global warming. (If you can make Al Gore look like a rock star as he heads through stadium corridors to deliver a PowerPoint slideshow, making actual rock stars look cool wouldn't be too much of a stretch.)But when it came to the camera-shy Page, it required something a little bit more.

"It took seduction," Guggenheim said. "It took us telling him how passionate we were about songs and songwriting, talking about the creative process."

The film, which opens on August 14, no doubt belongs in the upper echelon of rock documentaries, joining films like "The Last Waltz" and "Gimme Shelter," if only for the singular window it opens onto Page's life and work. Fifty years from now, if kids rocking their air guitars to Zeppelin tunes want to know what Page was really like, "Get Loud" will be their essential viewing.

And as Guggenheim explained, the connection between the past and the present, between old-school blues and classic rock, between punk and whatever comes next, will always be there. "The point of the movie is it could be anybody, any artist," he said. "It could be the next artist you haven't even heard of. It could be the guys from Blink-182. It really is the creative spark that you see in the movie. By looking back and seeing Jimmy Page and how he started and invented the dirty guitar sound, you can find that line all the way back through U2, through Jack White and now to the new guys who are doing it, like Green Day."

Check out everything we've got on "It Might Get Loud."

Kanye West, Black Keys, Wiz Khalifa Lead 2011 Woodie Award Nominees

College network mtvU also gives nods to B.o.B and Mumford & Sons.
By James Montgomery

By now, Kanye West has taken home just about every award possible, or at least stormed the stage at every awards show imaginable if he hasn't. But he's never won a Woodie, the hunk of lumber handed out annually by MTV's 24-hour college network mtvU — though March 16, that might finally change.

Because West — along with the likes of the Black Keys, Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B and Mumford & Sons — has just been announced as a nominee for the 2011 Woodie Awards, which will air live from Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest Music Festival.

West is nominated for the "Left Field Woodie," handed out to the year's "most original artist." He'll face off against Die Antwoord, Lil B, Yelawolf and Das Racist for the hardware.

And West isn't the only big name up for some wood. The Black Keys lead the pack with a pair of nominations: They'll face off against B.o.B, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem and Wiz Khalifa for "Woodie of the Year" (given to the year's best artist), and their "Tighten Up" clip is up for "Best Video Woodie," competing against Vampire Weekend's "Giving Up the Gun," Duck Sauce's "Barbra Streisand," Gorillaz's "Stylo" and Chiddy Bang's "Opposite of Adults."

"We are excited to be nominated for the 'Woodie Awards' and are super stoked that MTV has been so supportive of our videos," Black Keys drummer Patrick said.

In other categories, the National, Girl Talk, Matt & Kim, Robyn and Mumford & Sons square off for the "Performing Woodie," honoring the year's best tour, and up-and-comers Local Natives, Sleigh Bells, Dev, Wavves and Two Door Cinema Club go head-to-head for the "Breaking Woodie," for the year's top emerging artist.

"We couldn't ask for a better category to be nominated in," Matt & Kim said about their nod. "Playing live is what this band is built on. And the nomination isn't just for us. It proves our audience is the best, funnest and wildest party animals out there."

As in previous years, all the winners will be determined by you. Voting in all categories for the 7th annual Woodie Awards opens Tuesday (February 1) at Woodies.MTV.com, and runs through March 1. Voting for the "Breaking Woodie" award will continue all the way up until the show.

Previous Woodie winners include the Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Gym Class Heroes and Paramore. Performers and presenters for this year's show will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live March 16 at midnight ET/PT on MTV, mtvU and MTV2.

Kanye West Joins Lil Wayne, Bemoans Nine Inch Nails Face-Off At Virgin Fest

'How can you pick between me and Trent Reznor?' outspoken rapper asks Baltimore crowd.
By Jordan Upmalis

BALTIMORE — Fans got more than they bargained for at this weekend's Virgin Mobile Festival — more Kanye, anyway.

Not content to close out the two-day festival with his headlining Sunday slot, Mr. West stormed the stage earlier in the day, joining Lil Wayne for a meeting of hip-hop's hottest. Maybe 'Ye was pulling double duty to outshine the legends (Bob Dylan, Iggy and the Stooges), big rock veterans (Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Offspring), and upstarts (Paramore, Jack Johnson, Duffy) who took the Virgin stage over the weekend at Pimlico Race Course.

Rocking a Louis Vuitton backpack, West joined Weezy on Sunday afternoon to spit his verse from the "Lollipop" remix without skipping a beat. The collabo was the high-energy point of a blistering, better-late-than-never performance. Showing up a half-hour late for an hourlong set would be a cardinal sin for most artists, but Weezy more than made up for it. The crowd chanted his name and even booed briefly while waiting for his set, but it was all love once Lil Wayne hit the stage. Wayne came with a mix of old-school, new-school and a lot of gratitude. "How many of y'all got Tha Carter III?" he asked. "I f---in' appreciate you."

He even took time to honor Static Major, asking for a moment of silence for the late rapper and songwriter before jumping into the song that catapulted Wayne from an underground mixtaper to an undeniable mainstream superstar. After welcoming Kanye up for "Lollipop," Wayne wrapped his set with even more gratitude and some laughs, lip-syncing to Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" before leaving the stage.

While Wayne's day was done, Kanye was just getting started. He returned to the stage later that night like a hurricane, shrouded in flashing lights and fog. Fans threw up their Roc-A-Fella diamonds early and held them high all night. No irony was lost on 'Ye, who made it a point to prove his authenticity before jumping into "Diamonds From Sierra Leone."

"I work real hard at this rapping sh--," he said. "This is real rap."

Kanye dove into a set spanning his entire career, from his most recent verse from Young Jeezy's "Put On" to his humble beginnings on "All Comes Down," asking fans to "scream so loud I can't hear the music" if they knew the song.

And, of course, 'Ye talked, touching on everything from his mother's death to Barack Obama's nomination to crime in the festival's host city of Baltimore. He freestyled as well, expressing his gratitude for fame and his frustration that comes along with it. The raw emotion was undeniable. "I lost my mama/ I went through so much drama/ I went through so much drama/ I'm for Obama," he rapped. He then described his journey over to Pimlico Race Course, noting the flashing blue lights above cameras stationed throughout the 'hood and being content with the fact that even though many Baltimore natives couldn't afford to attend the concert, they could still see and hear the show from the parking lot outside the gates. He also shouted out MySpace, the Internet and Lil Wayne before beginning "Touch the Sky."

West took a bit of a jab at the festival's schedule, specifically the choice concertgoers had to make between his performance and one from Nine Inch Nails happening at the same time at the other end of the park (a dilemma faced by fans at Chicago's Lollapalooza a week earlier). "It's not a black-or-white thing, it's not a rap-or-rock-and-roll thing," he exclaimed. "It's a good-music thing. We jam about good things from the heart. How can you pick between me and Trent Reznor?"

But at the end of the day, Kanye's focus all came back down to his fans. Again freestyling, 'Ye expressed his eagerness to please those who came out to support him. "I hope you had a good time ... f--- that, the time of your life!" And with diamonds high in the sky and screams that could be heard around the block, the crowd's enthusiasm matched Kanye's (no easy feat).

The day before, it was up to West's fellow Chi-Town native Lupe Fiasco, who had fans bobbing their heads and singing along to "Superstar" and "Kick, Push." Despite technical difficulties, Lupe aimed to please, shouting after his microphone problem was resolved, "Let's hype this bitch back up, all right?" Given the amount of crowd-surfing during his set and the volume of fans chanting his name when he left the stage, he seemed to succeed.

But the weekend wasn't all about hip-hop. The Foos, the Stooges, Paramore and NIN brought the rock, but the guitar heroes of the day might have been Stone Temple Pilots. Taking the stage later than expected (thanks, Weezy), STP seemed to be the picture of reunification. The band was completely in sync thanks to its current 65-date tour. The focus wasn't mainly on themselves, though. Scott Weiland shared the love, shouting out those sharing the bill. "What a great day of f---ing music!," he gushed. "How about Iggy and the Stooges? And Nine Inch Nails are coming up!" He also had love for the crowd. "What a sea of energy," he exclaimed just before the crowd sang and bobbed along to every note of the band's breakthrough hit "Plush."

Lady Gaga Joins Bruce Springsteen, Elton John At Sting's Rainforest Benefit

Gaga performed duet of 'Speechless' and 'Your Song' with John at New York show.

In the past year Lady Gaga has risen from little-known dance act to one of today's major international superstars. But how do you know you've really arrived? It's when you get invited to perform at Sting's annual Rainforest Fund benefit show.

On Thursday night (May 13) Gaga was on-hand for the star-studded show at New York's Carnegie Hall, which also featured performances by Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, host Sting, Mary J. Blige and Blondie's Debbie Harry.

Wearing a frumpy gray old-lady wig, a white mini-hoop skirt and matching leggings that looked like they were made out of Ace bandages, Gaga sat down at the piano for what the New York Daily News described as a "sober version of one of the most earnest pop songs of all time," Ben E. King's timeless "Stand by Me." She also hooked up with pop icon John again for a run through her song "Speechless," which segued into his hit "Your Song" in what the paper described as a seamless collaboration between two stars who seemed "made for each other."

The 21st annual show opened with Sting singing "Englishman in New York." He later hooked up with Mary J. for their duet, "Whenever I Say Your Name." Springsteen belted out Bryan Adams' "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Dancing in the Dark."

Though he played such classics as "Philadelphia Freedom," John also got in on the cover action, taking on the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" and Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl," accompanied by a kick line of male go-go dancers wearing Speedos. Harry performed the Blondie classic "The Tide Is High," while Dame Shirley Bassey busted out two of her iconic James Bond themes, "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever," as well as her hit "Big Spender." Chic leader Nile Rodgers served up "Le Freak" and Sting returned later in the show for a cover of the Fine Young Cannibals' 1989 hit "She Drives Me Crazy."

The whole gang ended the night by taking on Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

Nelly Furtado, Kooks, Mash-Up Masters Go 'Crazy' With Gnarls Covers

Rash of reimaginings ranges from insanely good to just plain insane.
By Gil Kaufman

Gnarls Barkley
Photo: Matthew Donaldson

Every summer has one — that inescapable hit song that blankets radio and TV and becomes so mainstream, so massive, that it enters the repertoires of other artists who just can't deny its hook.

Call it the "Since U Been Gone" effect.

This summer it seems Gnarls Barkley's slice of sunnily depressive soul, "Crazy," is that song, and everyone from Nelly Furtado to British buzz-band-of-the-second the Kooks couldn't resist putting their own spin on it.

U.K. soul singer Terri Walker, former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers and singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne have all weighed in with unique versions. And mash-up artists have also been bitten by the bug, chopping up the irresistible bass bounce and hook with everything from old-school Prince and Aussie indie rockers the Avalanches to '60s girl group the Shirelles, classic rockers Supertramp and '90s one-hit wonder Skee-Lo in a rash of bootlegs.

Covers of the song — which set a record in England earlier this year by becoming the first digital download to debut at the top of the singles chart — can be found all over the Net. Curiously, the group has tried to stop the "Crazy" train before it gets out of hand. As the record reached its ninth week at #1, the duo of producer Danger Mouse and singer Cee-Lo asked that it be deleted from the U.K.'s list before people got tired of it.

Though the pair declined through their label to comment on the props from their peers, we grabbed as many decent versions as we could and gave them a spin to provide you with a guide to the insanely good and just plain nutty.

Assuming, of course, that you're not already sick of it.

Who: Nelly Furtado
Why you know her: She's competing with Gnarls, thanks to her summer smash, "Promiscuous."
What it sounds like: Furtado performed a quiet version of the song on a BBC radio show recently, accompanied only by acoustic guitar. Breathily crooning the song in a Norah Jones style, her smoky, downtown jazz-club vibe is the most low-key of the bunch.
Verdict: Kinda nutty

Who: Twilight Singers
Why you know them: Singer Greg Dulli was known for doing offbeat Motown covers with the Afghan Whigs, and his latest project has tackled artists ranging from Mary J. Blige and Stevie Wonder to Fleetwood Mac and George Gershwin.
What it sounds like: At a May 29 show at the Paradise in Boston, Dulli mellowed things out, giving Gnarls singer Cee-Lo a run for his money in the gravelly vocals department. The singer takes the uptempo song for a late-night, drunken-crooner makeover, thanks to brushed drums, piano and some spare guitar.
Verdict: Definitely a bit deranged

Who: Ray LaMontagne
Why you know him: The folk-oriented singer/songwriter released the blue-eyed soul album Trouble in 2004, garnering comparisons to everyone from Van Morrison to Tim Buckley.
What it sounds like: Kind of like a Richie Havens tune from 1968. The husky, scratchy-voiced LaMontagne transforms the song into a Woodstock-era acoustic anthem with a healthy dollop of impassioned folk/soul and a bit of improvised scatting at the end.
Verdict: Certifiable

Who: The Kooks
Why you know them: You probably don't ... yet. The latest English buzz band of retro-rocking teens has released a string of hit singles in the U.K. and recently made its American debut at the South by Southwest music conference.
What it sounds like: Seemingly the ones who kicked off the trend with their cover from March — the same month the song was released digitally overseas — singer Nick Pritchard slathers the song in a slack, British, indie sensibility. The acoustic-guitars-and-spare-drum take is a bit hippy-dippy, but Pritchard's squeaky, nasally voice and marble-mouthed delivery give it a nice edge.
Verdict: Sorry, but kinda kooky

Who: Terri Walker
Why you know her: Yet another testament to Gnarls' effect on the British music scene, Walker is a twentysomething North London R&B sensation who has yet to make it in the U.S. but whose 2003 debut, Untitled, snagged her a nomination for England's prestigious Mercury Music Prize.
What it sounds like: The female Cee-Lo (scratchy voice and all — do you sense a pattern here?) busts out a kinda bossa-nova soul version of the track in a live recording. A bit Jill Scott, a bit Erykah Badu, the funky cover retains the original's ragged R&B edge but replaces Danger Mouse's thick sonic backdrop with a jazzy guitar.
Verdict: A bit mad, a bit sad, but definitely not bad
