Britney Spears' 'I Wanna Go' Director Breaks Down Cheeky Clip

Chris Marrs Piliero explains the video's 'Half Baked' and 'Terminator' homages, but what about those elusive seashells?

Britney Spears' video for "I Wanna Go" — a dream-sequence-y, pop-culture-reference-packed tongue-in-cheek attack on the paparazzi — is so fun, it's quickly becoming one of our favorites. And because we can't get enough of it, MTV News sought out the vid's creative mastermind, director Chris Marrs Piliero (who also directed Ke$ha's "Blow"), to explain it to us, frame by frame.

"This opening scene poked fun at the ridiculous rumors that surround Britney," Piliero said of the clip's opening press conference, during which Britney tells off a room of reporters. "That is our homage to 'Half Baked.' I was really stoked that we were able to include that little parody homage in the video and that Guillermo Diaz, who is the guy [in the scene] giving the thumbs up, is from the movie."

After strutting out of the press conference and squeezing the butt of an autograph-seeking fan (played by one of her dancers), Spears strolls down the street, passing by a baby in a stroller who whistles at her.

"We were actually going to have three babies," Piliero revealed. "But the other two were just crying and crying. and I was like, 'F--- it, get 'em outta there.' And the one baby, he ruled and was supercute, so we went with him."

Spears' next saucy move is to flash a bunch of guys on the street: a young boy, his dad, a male driver getting a ticket and the cop writing it.

"That little kid was awesome," Piliero said of the young redheaded boy. "If you look closely, he's actually squeezing his juice box all over this shirt. The cop is another one of Britney's dancers. You might recognize him from the 'Hold It Against Me' video, he had blue hair."

Next up, Spears encounters a paparazzo on the street and grabs his camera and throws it to the ground.

"That was a very genuine performance from Britney," Piliero said of the scene. "I felt like she was letting out her inner emotion toward paparazzi. It was also really cold. I think she just went for it."

Cut to Spears on top of a taxi, microphone in hand with a long cord, which she uses to take out the various photographers who have surrounded her.

"A lot of people think this was inspired by 'Kill Bill,' because I'm a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I would totally own up to that if it was true," he admitted. "But I actually intended for her to always having her performance with the microphone [throughout the video] for her performance setup, so I thought that was a good way to tie it all together and I didn't want to give her a real weapon."

But Piliero was making an intentional pop-culture reference with the wording on the movie theater marquee in the background of the scene that reads "Crossroads 2: Cross Harder." "I've always thought that 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder' is one of the most ridiculously awesome titles for a sequel," he said. "And I needed to put something in the marquee, and I thought it would be a really fun Easter egg for fans."

Now something odd happens with the paparazzi who've been hit by Spears' microphone weapon — they are revealed to be robots or androids. "I love pop culture and this whole video is kind of a dream sequence," Piliero said. "I think it's natural to have fantasies and dreams with stuff inspired by pop culture, so that's why the robot guys kind of have a 'Terminator'-ish feel."

Before the "Terminator" 'bots can move in on Spears, Diaz drives up in a sports car and whisks her away, where he celebrates by pouring a carton of milk all over himself.

"Guillermo kills it in the scene with the milk, he's hilarious," Piliero enthused. "And I love Britney's reaction there; both her reactions where she's laughing are so good. A lot of people ask about the milk and what the deal with it is, a lot of people have theories too. I don't need to say what the point is, because I love hearing what people say, so I'll leave it at that. Same goes with the seashells too."

Cut to the final scene, where we realize that it was all a dream. Spears is at the press conference, shaken out of a daze when Guillermo steps in and tells the reporters, "No more questions," then hands Spears a handful of those seashells that Piliero won't explain. He looks back at the camera at the last moment and we see his eyes are robot red, an obvious nod to Michael Jackson's zombie-green eyes in the last shot of "Thriller."

" 'Thriller' is one of my favorite music videos ever," Piliero said. "I remember watching it when I was 5, that was what inspired me to become a music video director so I wanted to pay homage to it."

Britney Spears Vs. The Paparazzi: Best Music-Video Moments

Brit's 'I Wanna Go' video is hardly the first time she's taken aim at the prying tabloid media.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears is taking a stand against the paparazzi in the music video for her new single "I Wanna Go," which premiered online Wednesday morning (June 22). In the Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip she slings a microphone their way, knocking them off their perch. But it's hardly the first time Spears has taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to making a statement about the tabloid media.

In fact, since early on in her career, Spears has examined her love-hate affair with the prying lens of the paparazzi. After bursting on the pop scene in the late 1990s with a naughty girl-next-door image that made her a star, Spears learned that fame would come with lots of attention from the press. And, as in "I Wanna Go," she has made it a point to play with that relationship in her videos. Here, we look back on a few of our favorites.

"Lucky"
Britney first gave fans some insight into her celebrity life in this video, dating back to 2000 and released on her second smash album, Oops! ... I Did It Again. In the candy-colored, Dave Meyers-directed video, Spears plays a melancholy movie star who wants nothing more than to have a little fun.

"Overprotected"
A year after the "Lucky" video, Spears busted loose in this video from her Britney album. After breaking free from her hotel room, which is being watched by then real-life bodyguard Big Rob (that's right, the Jonas Brothers' Big Rob), she dances in the rain and her hotel lobby and then throws one big party for her girls in a large limo.

"Everytime"
She shows the darker side of fame in the video for "Everytime." By the time 2004 rolled around, Spears was not only In the Zone, she was frequently in the gossip pages. Her personal life was gossip fodder and in the clip, Spears plays a pop star whose public fight with her beau (played by Stephen Dorff) gets the paparazzi worked up, leading to an injury that may or may not bring about her untimely end.

"Piece of Me"
Spears had more fun in 2007 on the Blackout single "Piece of Me." Released during a transitional time in both her personal and professional life, Spears poked fun at herself, dancing around a nightclub's bathroom as magazine headlines about the pop star flash across the screen.

"If U Seek Amy"
The video for this 2009 single played up the song's controversial title (say it slowly, really slowly) using faux news briefs. Released on her Circus album, the clip for "If U Seek Amy" played up Spears' many sides: from good-natured mom to sexy party girl.

"Hold It Against Me"
This was Britney doing the thinking man's take on the media. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, "Hold It Against Me" tells the story of a super-creature from space that uses song and dance to win the hearts of earthlings. Eventually, the public scrutiny becomes too much for Spears' creature and she breaks down, only to rise again like a pop-music phoenix. Sound familiar?

New Releases: Linkin Park, Raveonettes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beth Orton, 'Underworld' Soundtrack & More

The Raveonettes are back on the chain gang again, the Chain Gang of Love, that is. The group's major-label debut will lead with the single "That Great Love Sound," and a dark video shot by Sophie Muller (Coldplay, Radiohead) in which the Danish duo try to kill each other.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club follow up their 2001 debut, B.M.R.C, with Take Them On, On Your Own, a rock record through and through, best seen on "Stop" and "Six Barrel Shotgun."

Linkin Park reissue their "Frat Party at the Pancake Festival," a DVD of the group's videos from Hybrid Theory, including "Crawling" and "Points of Authority," as well as concert footage and a peek into a day in the life of Linkin Park.

Jeff Buckley re-releases Live at Sin-e, except this time the album contains more than two more hours of music than the original, plus a bonus DVD featuring more music and a poem by Buckley. The extended version of the album features Buckley covering Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and Nina Simone.

Beth Orton finds herself on The Other Side of Daybreak, a remix album of last year's Daybreaker. Orton's music gets tinkered with by the likes of the Chemical Brothers and Roots Manuva.

The soundtrack to "Party Monster," the upcoming film starring Macaulay Culkin as nightclub kingpin turned murderer Michael Alig, features "The La La Song" by Marilyn Manson, "Seventeen" by Ladytron, and such classic dance songs as Stacy Q's "Two of Hearts" and Shannon's "Give Me Tonight."

Finally, the soundtrack to the vampire flick "Underworld" mostly features new songs including material by Wes Borland, John Frusciante, A Perfect Circle and David Bowie.

Britain's Kooks Hope To Konker The 'Star-Spangled Ceiling' With Second LP

Frontman says, 'I think we can do well,' despite difficulty many British pop artists have achieving Stateside success.
By John Norris

The Kooks

Britpop's most genial band, the Kooks, release their second album, Konk, this week, and they're part of a cohort of their countrymen who are trying to break through what we've dubbed the "Star-Spangled Ceiling" — the Stateside success that has eluded so many artists that are top-sellers in the U.K.

Can the bouncing boys from Brighton match — or, better yet, build upon — the inroads they made in America with their 2006 debut, Inside In/ Inside Out? (To date, that album has sold more than 108,000 copies Stateside, according to SoundScan, which is quite respectable these days.) Can their coastal, blue-state following (they sell out New York and Los Angeles shows in the blink of an eye, packing the room with the sort of fans who sing along to every word) spread to the heartland? How will they fare in a depleted U.S. market, where, most weeks, 200,000 sales get you to #1 and a mere 60,000 will land you a top 10 debut? And finally, can the Kooks — who were a "You Hear It First" artist back in 2006 — overcome what seems to be the recent dogged American resistance to any British pop artist not named Winehouse?

"I don't know, man, I'm really excited about America," said Luke Pritchard, the Kooks' perpetually upbeat frontman. "I think we've made a good album, and I think we can do well over here."

Pritchard may not be stressing about building a career in the U.S., but there is no doubt that for many recent British artists, America has been a tough nut to crack. Take a look at the British names represented in a recent U.S. top 100 albums chart, courtesy of SoundScan: Amy Winehouse, Robert Plant, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin and two versions of the Beatles-centric "Across the Universe" soundtrack.

That's it. The chart isn't particularly "English" or the least bit encouraging for any new U.K. artist dreaming of one day making a name Stateside.

For the sake of comparison, let's look at the American names charting in the U.K. top 100 that same week, according to the Official U.K. Charts Company: OneRepublic, We Are Scientists, Michael Jackson, the Temptations, Mark Ronson, Alicia Keys, Timbaland, MGMT, Jack Johnson, the Eagles, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, the Killers, Foo Fighters, Vampire Weekend, Paramore, Linkin Park.

As a Brit might say: "Bloody hell!"

All the same, Pritchard is excited about the Kooks' prospects here, particularly a May North American tour, during which the band will play Washington State's giant Sasquatch Festival and some of their biggest U.S. venues to date, including two nights at New York's 3,000-capacity Terminal 5. So much for Pritchard's modest assessment that "the Arctic Monkeys are a lot bigger than us in America. We've played to 300 people when they're playing to 2,000."

He added that another key difference between the two bands, which may bode well for the Kooks in the long run, is that they are less identifiably "English" than the simians from Sheffield. "Our music is really steeped in American music," Pritchard said. "Even more modern stuff, like [folk troubadour] Mason Jennings. To me, he's like the sweet side of Bob Dylan, that kind of Americana. I feel shaped by that as well. We have a real folk side, and that all came from America, whereas the Arctic Monkeys' music, that really is British indie."

There's a long-standing theory that if you're too British — in sound, accent or lyrical points of reference — you have a tough time in America. Plenty of U.K. artists over the years make that case, from the Jam to Billy Bragg to the Manic Street Preachers to even Blur, who didn't score a major pop hit in America until the decidedly unBlur-like "whoo hoo" of "Song 2." Which British artists tend to flourish in this country? Those who mine American sounds, like Amy Winehouse with her throwback soul; those who are unabashed Beatles disciples à la Oasis; and those who create something more difficult to categorize, like the most successful U.K. band in America in the 21st century, Coldplay.

The theory goes all the way back to the '60s, to Ray Davies of the Kinks — a quintessential Britpop band to be sure, but one that, after initial success, may have suffered in this country due to the resolute Englishness of Davies' songwriting. It just so happens that the Kooks recorded their new album in Davies' studio, Konk, and even named the record after it. Pritchard believes there is something to the "too English" theory. "Especially when it comes to subject matter," he said. "Pulp is quite a good example. Jarvis Cocker's lyrics are very tongue-in-cheek, English humor, which over here just might go over people's heads."

Maybe SoundScan tabulations of record sales are no longer a very accurate barometer of what people are really listening to, but no one is going to convince me that Americans are, in significant numbers, giving U.K. rock much of a chance. One can argue, as many of the Yank hipster blogs do, that much of it doesn't deserve a chance, but plenty of American bands who don't merit attention get it.

So does a star-spangled ceiling exist, or is this all just so much inside-football navel-gazing? For their part, the Kooks are happy to have a second record out, one on which, Pritchard says, they didn't just repeat themselves. With Konk, they've moved in a somewhat rockier direction, with the single "Always Where I Need to Be," the sing-along "Do You Wanna?" and "Sway," which Pritchard calls their first "proper power ballad."

"We didn't really set out to make a heavy album, but it was more like we just got into playing more rock and roll," Pritchard explained. "[Guitarist] Hugh [Harris] would just really get into his pedals and his guitar. It was quite natural, really."

And even if in other places, like the smack-talking track "All Over Town" and the charming, '60s-sounding "Mr. Maker," the Kooks are inescapably, undeniably British, Pritchard says they're not daunted by the prospect of reaching more Americans — far from it. "I think our music is working here," he said. "Plus, we like hanging out in America. It's an interesting place to be right now because everything is changing. And we definitely want to be a part of all that."

Bruce Springsteen Buckethead The Dandy Warhols Missy Elliot

New Releases: '8 Mile' DVD, Mr. Cheeks, Raveonettes, Libertines, Stephen Malkmus, Buzzcocks & More

Time again for new releases, but this week's big story might not be a record: Eminem's rags-to-riches story, "8 Mile," makes its DVD debut and features deleted scenes of Em spontaneously battling extras from the film in a freestyle sequence.

The compilation Atticus: Dragging the Lake 2 features pop-punks Blink-182 and their side projects Box Car Racer and the Transplants, plus contributions from Sparta, Rocket From the Crypt and Alkaline Trio.

The Libertines up the racket in Up the Bracket, their punk rock album produced by the Clash's Mick Jones, which invokes the Jam and the Buzzcocks on "Horror Show" and "The Boy Looked at Johnny." Meanwhile, the Buzzcocks invoke themselves on their new eponymous album. After some shaky years trying to maintain relevance, the punk pioneers recapture some of their original magic as co-founder Howard Devoto returns to pen "Stars" and "Lester Sands" with Pete Shelley.

M. Ward, a singer/songwriter combination of Nick Drake and Neil Young with a hint of John Fahey, presents his haunting Transfiguration of Vincent, while Stereolab bassist Simon Johns releases Trinity Neon from his band Imitation Electric Piano.

Moldy Peaches and their Unreleased Cutz & Live Jamz share shelf space with the Blam's poppy garage rock on their self-titled LP, as well as with the North Carolina hip-hop trio Little Brother's Listening.

Now that the buzz on this band has increased, it's time for its major-label debut. You Hear It First alums the Raveonettes present, for the second time, Whip It On. And finally, Stephen Malkmus is back. The ex-Pavement star and his band the Jicks release their second album, Pig Lib. Wowee Zowee.

Diddy and girlfriend Kim Porter are splitting up, just months after she gave birth to twin girls, the couple announced Tuesday (July 10), according to The Associated Press. In a recent cover story in Essence, the two declared love for each other, although he admitted he was an "ex-player" and wasn't ready to marry Porter. "Do you really think that God meant for a man to have just one wife?" he said in the magazine. Diddy and Porter already had a son when he was seeing Jennifer Lopez, but Diddy eventually reunited with his former girlfriend, even after she took him to court seeking increased child-support payments. ...

More artists have been added to the bill for this year's Bumbershoot festival, which will be held September 1-3 in Seattle. Fergie, John Legend, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, (+44) and the Apples in Stereo are the latest acts to join the bill, with Head Automatica, Menomena, the Bouncing Souls and others climbing onboard as well. This festival is being anchored by the Shins, Wu-Tang Clan, Crowded House and Panic! at the Disco. ...

"You make so the market can't function at its best without you." ...

A Springfield has been chosen to host the premiere of "The Simpsons Movie" — but is it big enough to handle the hype? Vermont's Springfield — a small town of 9,300 people that has a 100-seat movie theater — will host the movie on July 27, thanks to an online poll it wasn't even invited to take part in at first, AP reports. A local Chamber of Commerce executive appealed for the town to be included, after which a video shot by a 17-year-old cameraman was submitted for consideration. The clip — which features a talk-show host dressed as Homer chasing a pink doughnut through the town — drew 15,367 votes, earning the town the premiere. ...

Raekwon is polishing off his next solo LP, Ice Water: Polluted Water, for an August 28 release. Next time you strap on your "Guitar Hero" ax, you might want to have a top hat handy too — Slash will appear as an avatar in "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock." Nicole Richie can breathe a little easier, at least for now — her lawyer has forced another delay in her DUI trail, People reports. "The trial will not happen [Wednesday]," Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Jane Robison told the outlet. "Richie's attorney filed a motion ... stating that their key witness, a drug expert, was unavailable for trial." Both sides have been called to court Wednesday to discuss the motion — but either way, the trial will be delayed for at least another day. ...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is printed, so there's no going back on the ending, but fans are calling on author J.K. Rowling to "Save Harry" — even if he's already destined to die. In an online petition launched by British book retailer Waterstone's, Rowling is being asked to keep the series going past this seventh installment, whether Harry survives the finale or not. "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famously killed off Sherlock Holmes, yet brought him back after years of demand from his fans and publishers," Waterstone's Wayne Winstone said. "Couldn't the same happen for Harry Potter?" ...

Avril Lavigne's alleged plagiarism ordeal has been grabbing headlines left and right, but fellow Canadian artist Chantal Kreviazuk isn't about to keep piling on the singer. On Tuesday, the singer/songwriter issued a statement retracting statements she made to Performing Songwriter Magazine in which she doubted Lavigne's writing abilities. "When I saw the track listing to Avril's new record, it caught my attention that she had the same title as a song I had sent her a while back. When I heard it, I immediately realized that it was a coincidence. The songs have nothing in common. I have always maintained that the song on Avril's album is completely different, having no similarity in melody or lyric, and Avril has in no way stolen my song. I simply never said that or thought it. My statements and any inference from my statements, which call into question Avril's ethics or ability as a respected and acclaimed songwriter, should be disregarded and are retracted. Avril is an accomplished songwriter, and it has been my privilege to work with her." Curiously, Kreviazuk issued the statement through Nettwerk Music Group — Lavigne is managed by Nettwerk Management. ...

The controversial director appeared on "The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer" on Monday to discuss his new movie "Sicko," only to find his interview prefaced by an unsavory segment on the flick by CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who attempted to dispel some of the film's points about the U.S. health care system. Moore erupted after that, refuting the segment and bashing the network for its news coverage in the lead-up to the Iraq war. The director's Web site quickly posted an extensive point/counterpoint response to Gupta's segment following the Monday interview. On Tuesday, Blitzter's program aired the more subdued second part of the interview. ...

"The one thing that still stuns me ... is that almost no one in the 'stop global warming' camp talks about the environmental ramifications of animal production," he said. ...

Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron has been diagnosed with throat cancer, according to a post on the band's Web site. He will not join the Pogues on their North American tour this fall. Beyoncé made a surprise visit in an emergency room Sunday after her St. Louis show — two people were injured at the concert when pyrotechnics reportedly spilled into the front row, according to The Associated Press. Darryl Williams, head nurse at the hospital, told AP that Beyoncé, who met with the victims for 45 minutes, "was just very concerned about the people injured in the audience. [Her visit] was unannounced and we kept it very low-key so that she could spend time with them." A spokesperson for Barnes-Jewish Hospital told the news service that the injuries were minor and both victims were expected to make full recoveries. A spokesperson for Music World entertainment, which represents the singer, did not comment to the news service. ...

Jurors will be able to hear from a security guard who testified controversially in 1993 that he heard Phil Spector say all women should be shot in the head, AP reports. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler had previously chosen not to allow the testimony but reconsidered when prosecutors raised the issue again. Fidler said he thought before that the testimony wouldn't be admissible because the remark was made too long ago and wasn't specific to the shooting death of Lana Clarkson — who died after a bullet was fired through her mouth. But he changed his mind upon further research. "In this case, you have a woman who is shot in the head. It is highly particularized," he said. ... Almost 19 million people watched Live Earth on NBC and its affiliates, AP reports — far short of the 2 billion event organizers had hoped for. On the other hand, the organizers' estimate was also supposed to include online viewers, whereas the 19 million figure only includes viewers who watched at least six minutes of the telecasts. ...

Amid all the Live Earth happenings over the past week, Axl Rose found time to vent about why Guns N' Roses wouldn't be performing at the event's Rio de Janeiro installment. "We were not asked until the last couple weeks while we were on tour in Australia and have upcoming sold-out dates already rescheduled in Japan," he said in a press release issued Friday. "I was asked to perform individually with Lenny Kravitz by the promoters and Mr. Gore. As we were working this out, Lenny unfortunately became injured and temporarily canceled his involvement from the event." Rose claims he wasn't made aware that Kravitz's performance was reconfirmed until it was too late. "Guns N' Roses or I were not asked to play anywhere else, such as Japan or Australia (as we are already in the regions on tour), and in which we have formally offered to perform, but the offer of our involvement was declined." ...

Prince played three shows over 12 hours in his hometown of Minneapolis from Saturday into early Sunday, ending his live streak when police shut down his early morning homecoming show at the legendary First Avenue club — featured in "Purple Rain" — 70 minutes into a 24-song set, AP reports. After playing 15 songs, Prince pulled the plug on the show — which didn't start until nearly 2:45 a.m. — announcing, "The authorities say we gotta go. We always listen to the authorities. I promise I'll be back." Prince played a 45-minute set at Macy's for his fragrance launch early Saturday, followed by a full concert at the Target Center. ...

Nicole Richie is due in court on Wednesday to answer a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, but dad Lionel Richie isn't coming down hard on his daughter, who he said is "just in an unfortunate situation." The singer, who spoke to the AP at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, said Nicole is sorry for her mistakes. "She keeps apologizing to me," he said. Foo Fighters will strike back on September 25 with Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, their sixth studio album. Aside from rocking a totally grammatically correct title (Dave Grohl hates stodgy commas) the album will feature 12 tracks, with titles such as "The Pretender," "Long Road to Ruin," the emo-baiting "Cheer Up, Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)" and "Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners," no doubt a tribute to the two Tasmanian miners who, while trapped in a collapsed mine, listened to songs by the band until they were rescued — and later met, and shared a beer with, Grohl and company. ...

Clay Aiken tangled with a fellow passenger on a flight to Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday morning, AP reports, leading to an FBI investigation but no arrests. The FBI told Tulsa World that there was a dispute on the aircraft between a male former "American Idol" contestant and a woman on the plane, but would not confirm Aiken's identity. The argument allegedly began over the male passenger's putting his foot on the woman's armrest, and the female passenger reportedly gave the man "a minor shove." There were no injuries reported, though Aiken did joke onstage Saturday night that he'd been beaten up by a girl earlier in the day. ...

Wyclef Jean Froze Up When Meeting Michael Jackson

'I go to shake his hand -- and my whole voice box goes out," former Fugees frontman recalls.
By Kyle Anderson

Michael Jackson possessed the sort of fame that was so sweeping and intense that it defied comprehension. Even when he was out of the spotlight, he still commanded fawning, sometimes aggressive crowds whenever he went out in public. That mania wasn't limited to just normal everyday fans, either — even other famous people, who are accustomed to fame being in the public eye, still swooned and stammered when Jackson was in the room.

In an interview that ended up not being included in MTV's "Michael Jackson's Human Nature" special, which aired over the weekend, former Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean admitted as much when he recalled meeting Jackson in 1997. The two worked together briefly on a recording session for the remix album Blood on the Dance Floor (the track never saw the light of day) and Wyclef admitted that the prospect of meeting Jackson was overwhelming.

"When I knew he was coming, I went to the bathroom, put some water on my face and I was rehearsing how I would be talking to Mike," he said. "When I was in the presence of Michael Jackson, I go to shake his hand — and my whole voice box goes out. This is the kind of effect that this man had on me!"

Jean said that even his bodyguards, who tended to shrug off everything, got wound up once Jackson was in the room. But as he explained, Jackson's music was such a huge part of everybody's development that they couldn't help but get excited.

"When somebody is the soundtrack of your life, you can just imagine," he said. "Michael Jackson and Bob Marley — those were the soundtracks of my life."

'Eclipse' Soundtrack Includes Vampire Weekend, Beck, Dead Weather

Metric, Florence and the Machines, Black Keys, the Bravery also announced in slowly revealed lineup.

We already knew Muse were onboard for the much-hyped "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" soundtrack, but on Wednesday (May 12), we learned who else would be joining them ... albeit very slowly.

Yes, the folks over at MySpace Music — perhaps taking a page out of the Bonnaroo playbook — decided to reveal the names of each artist (and song) on the album individually, with a new name being unveiled every 30 minutes. And given that there are 15 spots to be revealed, well, we hope you're not doing anything for the next seven-and-a-half hours.

Anyway, at the time of this writing, seven acts and songs have been revealed, a list that includes Vampire Weekend (who contribute a song called "Jonathan Low"), Beck (who duets with Bat for Lashes on "Let's Get Lost" — no word from Atlantic Records on whether it's a cover of the Elliott Smith song or of the old jazz standard), the Bravery ("Ours"), the Dead Weather ("Rolling in on a Burning Tree") and Metric, who nabbed the album's opening spot with a track called "Eclipse (All Yours)."

Other confirmed artists and songs are Florence and the Machine ("Heavy in Your Arms"), Akron, Ohio, hammers the Black Keys ("Chop and Change") and London-based pop act Fanfarlo ("Atlas").

The first single off the "Eclipse" soundtrack is Muse's rather excellently titled "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)," which was revealed on "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's official site last week. The single will head to radio on May 17. As previously reported, the "Eclipse" soundtrack is due in stores on June 8, which is probably right around the time MySpace will be finished revealing the last of the artists that will appear on it.

What do you think of the "Eclipse" lineup so far? Is it missing anyone you were hoping for? Sound off in the comments.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

Well, there's really no denying it now: Britney Spears really is back! Back to selling tons of records, at least.

Her Circus album will debut at #1 on next week's Billboard albums chart, selling just under 505,100 copies. It's Spears' fifth album to debut at #1 on the chart, and it sold nearly twice as many copies as last year's Blackout album, which was denied the top spot on the chart by the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden.

Circus' first-week sales total is certainly big, but it's only the sixth biggest opening of 2008, behind albums like Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, AC/DC's Black Ice, Coldplay's Viva la Vida, Taylor Swift's Fearless and T.I.'s Paper Trail. Still, it outpaced the first-week numbers of some of Brit's pop peers, including Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, Mariah Carey's E = MC2 and Miley Cyrus' Breakout.

Interestingly enough, the Brit-sanity was so high among album buyers that Blackout also managed to return to the charts, selling more than 4,600 copies to land at #198.

Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, told The Associated Press that the success of Circus really does signify Brit's triumphant return. "At the end of the day, I think she is America's pop princess, and the world's pop princess, and this just reconfirms it to everyone who doubted it," he said. "Professionally, she's feeling great. ... It's great for her to hear that she's got a #1 album again."

Those sentiments were seconded by in a statement from Jive Records, Britney's label. "We're absolutely thrilled for Britney," the statement reads. "The response to Circus is a testament to how great the album is, and to how connected and supportive Britney's fans are to her and her music."

Swift's Fearless lands in the #2 spot on the albums chart for the second-straight week, selling 193,500 copies. Beyoncé's Sasha Fierce is at #3, with sales of more than 152,800 copies. Last week's chart champ, Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, drops to #4, with sales of close to 141,700 copies. Nickelback's Dark Horse rounds out the top five, selling 133,400 copies.

The rest of the top 10 features the "Twilight" soundtrack at #6; the week's other big-name debut, Akon's Freedom at #7; the soundtrack to "High School Musical 3" at #8; the ubiquitous hits collection Now That's What I Call Music! 29 at #9; and David Cook's self-titled effort at #10.

Aside from Circus and Freedom (which sold 110,600 copies), other notable debuts on next week's chart include Scarface's Emeritus (#24, with 42,000 copies sold), Neil Young's Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 (#40, with 26,400 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Beyoncé's new movie, "Cadillac Records" (#66, with 15,600 copies sold).
