Where Ya Been? Sammie Graduating To Comeback, Third Eye Blind Can See Clearly Now

We couldn't get enough of them. Their songs were our soundtrack, and we laughed, danced, cried and loved along with them. They flashed across our radio and TV burning brightly — but where have they been lately? As you'll find out in our new regular feature Where Ya Been?, sometimes the stories behind your favorite songs are more interesting than the hits themselves.

Who: Sammie (born Sammie Bush)

Biggest hit: "I Like It"

Claim to fame: Helped pave the way for the current wave of teen male R&B crooners.

Why do I know that name?: It's been a while since we heard from preteen R&B sensation Sammie. The pint-size singer exploded on the scene in the late '90s as a 12-year-old after paying his dues singing in his Miami church from the age of 4. When a grade-school music teacher noticed his chops, he was transferred to a performing arts magnet school and joined up with two older boys in a vocal group, the Wonder 3. Before long, they were auditioning for "It's Showtime at the Apollo," but Sammie was the only one the program wanted. He debuted on the "Apollo Kids" segment in 1998 and won the finals for his rendition of Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour" the following year. The "Apollo" win put Sammie on the radar of Atlanta-based hitmaker Dallas Austin (Boyz II Men, TLC), who co-wrote and executive produced the singer's 2000 debut, From the Bottom to the Top, which was recorded the summer after he completed sixth grade. The album drew comparisons to both Wonder and the young Michael Jackson, and Sammie said the attention was, well, amazing. "It was a lot of fun [being a star at 12]," recalled Sammie, now 18, of his string of hits that included "I Like It" and "Crazy Things I Do." "At such a young age, to travel the world and have girls scream over you — it's very different from what most 12-year-olds are accustomed to."

Reading, writing and reeling it back in: After another hit, the title track to the forgettable Keanu Reeves flick "Hardball" — a song that featured fellow half-pints Bow Wow, Lil Wayne and Lil' Zane — Sammie voluntarily pulled the plug on his career in an attempt to salvage something of a more typical high school experience. "It just popped up," said Sammie of his decision to quit the biz and go back to finish school. "I never anticipated stopping, but I thought about it and it felt like the best thing to do. I always knew I'd come back, though. People see me and think I'm still that 12-year-old kid and they're surprised at how big I got to be."

High school confidential: When Sammie started ninth grade and "Hardball" was in theaters, he was so mobbed by autograph seekers in the halls of his high school that he needed a security escort to get from class to class. "But by the end of my sophomore year, it faded away and people started treating me like a regular guy," he recalled. He also played on the school's basketball team and was crowned homecoming king.

Call it a comeback: By junior year, Sammie had joined choir to get his voice — which had dropped noticeably lower — back into shape. After consulting with his mom, he decided to begin the second act of his career. When Hurricane Frances hit Florida in 2004, his family evacuated to Atlanta, which is how he ended up at a birthday party for Austin. "He was in shock at how big I had gotten and he said right away, 'I want to sign you,' " Sammie said of the producer, with whom he had kept in touch over the years. He is now signed to Austin's recently relaunched Rowdy Records and just filmed the first video from his upcoming second album, Sammie, for the Jazze Pha-produced "You Should Be My Girl," featuring Sean Paul from the Youngbloodz. He's also signed on for his first film role, alongside fellow young crooner Ne-Yo, in "Steppin'." "It's not scary, but I'm more anxious now," said Sammie, who co-wrote many of the songs on his adult, R&B-flavored new album. "I'm working out in the gym all the time because these young boys out here with those ab muscles ... it's a lot of hard work, but I'm not a new artist, I just have to re-establish myself."

The moral: Staying in school can be cool. "If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, 'Sammie, what happened?,' I wouldn't have to sing for my income," the singer joked. "A lot of people do get forgotten, but if it's a hit, it's a hit forever. I do 'I Like It' and everyone sings along like it was yesterday."

Who: Third Eye Blind

Biggest hit: "Semi-Charmed Life"

Claim to fame: The only Top 40 group we can think of whose first hit mixed "doot doot doot"s with lyrics about oral sex and snorting crystal meth.

Third Eye Blind: Where Ya Been?

Why do I know that name?: Formed in the early 1990s by San Francisco singer/songwriter Stephan Jenkins, Third Eye Blind were one of the least likely pop groups of the decade. The band landed a recording contract with Elektra Records after hitting the label's radar with a widely circulated demo and an opening slot for Oasis in their hometown in 1996. When their self-titled debut was released the next year, it spawned the huge hit "Semi-Charmed Life," which, despite its head-bobbing chorus and seemingly sunny lyrics about beaches and young love, is one of the darker songs to ever top the charts — a distinction Jenkins relishes to this day. "Someone described them once as 'pretty little songs with dirty little words,' and I like that," Jenkins said. "Our label couldn't understand that a band could have some songs that were catchy but its message was dark. They couldn't understand that we were more about the Velvet Underground than the Beatles."

Second time's a charm ... After selling more than 6 million copies of their debut (bolstered by hits like "Life," "Jumper," "How's It Going to Be" and "Graduate"), Third Eye Blind returned in 1999 with the darker, more experimental Blue, which would sell nearly 2 million copies but spawned fewer hits.

... But third time wasn't: By the time the band released 2003's Out of the Vein, Elektra was in the midst of being absorbed into Atlantic Records and Jenkins contends the group was not a priority. "I worked really hard on Out of the Vein," he said of the band's least successful outing, which has sold around 250,000 copies. "Elektra was imploding as we were making it, so we didn't make a video and didn't do a marketing campaign, but as far as critics go, it was my best-reviewed album." Discouraged by the record's failure, Jenkins said he pulled back and did some soul-searching. "If you take the first three albums, they were of a piece," he explained. "They were lyrically about making a good shield, putting up a really good front and all the triumph and damage that that incurred." While lying low, Jenkins produced girlfriend Vanessa Carlton's 2004 album, Harmonium, and began writing songs for a solo record. Once he heard what the rest of his band — Arion Salazar (bass), Brad Hargreaves (drums) and Tony Fredianelli (guitar) — was up to in the studio, he scrapped those plans and got to work on the group's fourth release.

Going it alone: "This album is about what happens when you take all those layers you have and you let go of them," he said of the record the group began in early 2005. "That process, lyrically, has been really hard for me." Admitting to a touch of writer's block, Jenkins — who has co-produced all of the band's albums — said lyrics have been holding things up so far, but he doesn't worry that people have forgotten about 3EB. He noted that a fan-run Web site recently racked up 36,000 hits in a single month, a British magazine named Blue one of the most underrated albums of the past decade — and despite not having a new album to push, in May 3EB played to their biggest crowd ever as a headliner in Philadelphia. "We finally got our cred and people got what we were doing," Jenkins said. A career retrospective is due in July on Rhino Records, but Jenkins said he doesn't plan to shop the new album to a label. "Why would we?" he asked. "What will that do for us? I don't think we can equal what we did before [saleswise], but I think we can reach a lot of people with our music and our albums can be defining the culture." Current plans call for the as-yet-untitled disc to be released in 2007.

The moral: If, as Jenkins terms his group, a "very badly marketed" band can sell nearly 10 million albums, just think of what Third Eye Blind could do if Jenkins were calling all the shots.

Ne-Yo And Fabolous Working On Best Of Both Worlds LP

'[There's] something about his voice and my voice that makes sense together,' Libra Scale crooner tells MTV News of a Jay-Z/R. Kelly-style album.

Grammy-winning R&B crooner Ne-Yo is working on a couple of projects, including a new solo album and a collaborative LP with rapper Fabolous.

The singer/songwriter's fourth album, Libra Scale, was only released last November, but during NBA All-Star Weekend he told MTV News that since some fans may not have gravitated to the project like his past work, he's already back on the grind.

"I'm actually working on a new album as we speak," Ne-Yo revealed. "Libra Scale was a project, it was an experiment. The people that got it, got it. The people that didn't, it's all good. I got a little cool for the room, I understand that. But this next album is more about just listening to the music, vibing out, determine your own adventure, back to what it is I normally do. Be looking for that around September."

Ne-Yo's standards are high, considering Libra Scale debuted at #9 on the Billboard albums chart and got favorable reviews in the press. The singer performed a medley of songs from the LP at the 2010 American Music Awards. But the album didn't match the commercial success of its predecessor, Year of the Gentleman, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 when it was released in 2008, selling about 250,000 copies its first week in stores.

Ne-Yo's upcoming project is still untitled, as is a planned joint project with Brooklyn rapper Fabolous. The Def Jam labelmates have worked together before, with Ne-Yo lending his vocals to Fabolous' 2007 hit single "Make Me Better," both artists appearing on Jamie Foxx's "She Got Her Own" the following year and Fab giving a verse to Ne-Yo's "Crazy Love," from Libra.

"We have been talking about getting in, trying to do kind of a Best of Both Worlds-type vibe situation," Ne-Yo said, referring to 2002's joint album from Jay-Z and R. Kelly. "It's just something about his voice and my voice that makes sense together. We been kicking ideas around and I can't say exactly when to look for it, but definitely look for it. Keep your eyes peeled, we'll be out there."

What did you think of Ne-Yo's Libra Scale album? Tell us in the comments!

Taylor Swift's First Album Breaks Nickelback's Billboard Record

Taylor Swift has been on the top 200 for 157 weeks, the longest reign of the decade.
By Jocelyn Vena

In the three years since Taylor Swift released her self-titled debut album, she has become an undeniable superstar. Not only has she found mainstream success outside of the Nashville country-music scene, but she's been breaking records all over the place. On the heels of her Fearless re-release, 2006's Taylor Swift just became the longest-charting album of the decade.

"That's a crazy statistic," the singer told MTV News at rehearsals for her gig hosting "Saturday Night Live" this week. "It means that my first album that came out, the self-titled album, charts longer than I guess any album this century."

The album, which contains Swift's breakout hit "Teardrops on My Guitar," came out in November 2006, peaked at #5 in 2008, and has remained on the charts for a whopping 157 weeks and counting. Take that, former record-holders, Nickleback! "Was it Nickelback? Who I like!" she said. "I'm just really excited."

Swift credits the success of the album to her massively loyal fanbase. "I mean, when things like that happen, I love the fans more and more," she said. "And I didn't think I could love them any more for all the things they've done for me, especially in the last year."

The world appears to be Swift's oyster, and this week the pearl is "SNL," where she'll also serve as the night's musical guest. "It's just blown my mind that I get to be here hosting 'SNL,' and it's all because of what the fans have done for me," she said. "So, [the fans] continue to amaze me."

Britney Spears Is Back On Top As Circus Sells More Than 500,000 Copies

With her fifth debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, Brit confirms her comeback.
By James Montgomery

Well, there's really no denying it now: Britney Spears really is back! Back to selling tons of records, at least.

Her Circus album will debut at #1 on next week's Billboard albums chart, selling just under 505,100 copies. It's Spears' fifth album to debut at #1 on the chart, and it sold nearly twice as many copies as last year's Blackout album, which was denied the top spot on the chart by the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden.

Circus' first-week sales total is certainly big, but it's only the sixth biggest opening of 2008, behind albums like Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, AC/DC's Black Ice, Coldplay's Viva la Vida, Taylor Swift's Fearless and T.I.'s Paper Trail. Still, it outpaced the first-week numbers of some of Brit's pop peers, including Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, Mariah Carey's E = MC2 and Miley Cyrus' Breakout.

Interestingly enough, the Brit-sanity was so high among album buyers that Blackout also managed to return to the charts, selling more than 4,600 copies to land at #198.

Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, told The Associated Press that the success of Circus really does signify Brit's triumphant return. "At the end of the day, I think she is America's pop princess, and the world's pop princess, and this just reconfirms it to everyone who doubted it," he said. "Professionally, she's feeling great. ... It's great for her to hear that she's got a #1 album again."

Those sentiments were seconded by in a statement from Jive Records, Britney's label. "We're absolutely thrilled for Britney," the statement reads. "The response to Circus is a testament to how great the album is, and to how connected and supportive Britney's fans are to her and her music."

Swift's Fearless lands in the #2 spot on the albums chart for the second-straight week, selling 193,500 copies. Beyoncé's Sasha Fierce is at #3, with sales of more than 152,800 copies. Last week's chart champ, Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, drops to #4, with sales of close to 141,700 copies. Nickelback's Dark Horse rounds out the top five, selling 133,400 copies.

The rest of the top 10 features the "Twilight" soundtrack at #6; the week's other big-name debut, Akon's Freedom at #7; the soundtrack to "High School Musical 3" at #8; the ubiquitous hits collection Now That's What I Call Music! 29 at #9; and David Cook's self-titled effort at #10.

Aside from Circus and Freedom (which sold 110,600 copies), other notable debuts on next week's chart include Scarface's Emeritus (#24, with 42,000 copies sold), Neil Young's Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 (#40, with 26,400 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Beyoncé's new movie, "Cadillac Records" (#66, with 15,600 copies sold).

The White Stripes, In Memoriam

The band called it quits on Wednesday, bringing to a close a career that ranks among the all-time best.
By James Montgomery

The White Stripes in 2002
Photo: Nicky J. Sims/ Getty Images

In 2002, when I was working as a lowly researcher at Spin magazine, the White Stripes — a band, who, along with fellow revivalists the Strokes and the Hives, were in the midst of "saving rock and roll" (to borrow a phrase thrown about liberally at the time) — played a free show in New York's Union Square. It was, and still is, one of the five greatest rock gigs I've ever seen, and not just because it meant I got to skip out on work to go see it.

Although it lasted only an hour, it was my first indoctrination into the way of the White Stripes: Do it fast, do it cheap, do it loud and don't stop doing it even when the man pulls the plug, which in fact happened. After organizers turned off the sound, Jack and Meg tore through an unplugged cover of the standard "Boll Weevil Blues." I would see them again in subsequent years — a thunderous '03 performance at Roseland Ballroom, months after they conquered the world with Elephant and appropriately used footlights to cast mile-high shadows against the backdrop, a roaring set in 2007 at Bonnaroo, where they unified the masses with Icky Thump's skronk — but nothing stuck with me quite like that first show.

Check out photos of the White Stripes through the years.

Maybe it was because I was still young and impressionable, at least impressionable enough to truly believe that a duo from Detroit could change the world with nothing more than a guitar and a drumkit, or maybe it was because the Stripes were the closest thing I'd seen to a genuinely revelatory rock band. There was a mythology to them — the red-and-white getups, the whole "brother/sister" dynamic, the fact that Jack White seemed like a genuine sharecropper's son — not to mention a blue-collar power that recalled the punch of fellow Motor City maniacs the MC5 or nearby neighbors the Stooges. They didn't care about fashion, they didn't care about pristine studio sound, they just cared about playing music in the loudest, most primitive way possible. And that's where the magic came from.

The White Stripes were, in short, everything I could ever want in a rock band. And on Wednesday (February 2), when they announced they were ending their 13-year run, I was genuinely saddened. And not just because I would never get to see them live one last time, or listen to another one of their records front to back or, even, get the chance to interview them again (something I only had the opportunity to do once), but because, in some small way, it meant that a little part of my youth had died too. And it was never coming back.

Because, though they were a preternaturally old band (their entire output recalls nothing recorded over the past 30-plus years), the Stripes were also incredibly young. Jack White, ever the aged bluesman, was also remarkably childlike; he delighted in nothing more than playing loud, tweaking the media and doing things his way. And it would be easy to say that Meg White played the drums like a child, but I prefer to look at the unbridled joy with which she hammered away at the kit. It was as if she had never known better. And the band was better because of it.

But the thing that made them eternally young (at least in my eyes) was their unyielding sense of purpose. There truly was no obstacle they could not overcome, no challenge too great, because the White Stripes believed in themselves. It's what drove them to start a band in the first place — so what if our drummer can't drum, we'll figure it out ourselves — and record in the most arcane ways imaginable. It's what drove them to play a show in every province and territory in Canada: They simply knew they could do it.

There's a name for that childlike confidence and people call it DIY. It's how we got bands like the Ramones and Minutemen, how hip-hop grew from rec rooms in the South Bronx and, really, it's the reason anyone should ever decide to pick up an instrument: I can do this. We can do this. Together, we can change the world.

It's the engine that drove the best bands in history and, yes, the White Stripes are definitely one of those. I'd argue that, of all their contemporaries, they're the only group that we'll still be talking about in 20 years' time. Their place in rock history is secure. And though I was saddened to learn of their demise, there was something in their farewell message that gave me hope. It's how they decided to sign off, with a statement that, if anything, recalled the very spirit that made them start the band way back in 1997. Here's what they wrote:

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

That's about as DIY. as you can get. The White Stripes now truly belong to us. And if that's not a fitting way to end this piece, then I don't know what is. So farewell, White Stripes, you lightning rods, you touchstones, you eternal children. You were everything that rock and roll should be, and you will be missed.

Share your thoughts about the White Stripes disbanding in the comments.

Shakira busted out her best Stevie Nicks ensemble during "American Idol" to perform her new single, "Gypsy," with a little help from Rascal Flatts.

The free-spirit singer — wearing a sparkly tank top, dangling earrings and a floor-length red skirt — started the song out on harmonica. During the first verse, she was joined by some interpretive backup dancers and even threw in some moves herself.

Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox then chimed in with backing vocals. As the pair harmonized, they headed to a platform behind the "Idol" judges and Shakira showed off some of her trademark hip-swiveling. She even pulled the harmonica back out to close up the song.

After the performance, host Ryan Seacrest said what most of the viewers were probably thinking: "Gary LeVox and Shakira — I never thought I'd see that!"

He also had a tough question for the Flatts frontman: "What was it like to move your hips with her?"

"I recommend to him to wear a skirt, but he refused," Shakira chimed in.

Rascal Flatts kicked off the "Idol" elimination episode by performing their new single, "Unstoppable," in place of a top-six group number.

Back in February, Shakira released a steamy video for "Gypsy" starring Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal. The video, like the song paired with it, has a much more organic vibe than other tracks from Shakira's 2009 album She Wolf. Directed by frequent Shakira collaborator Jaume de Laiguana, the video tells a love story that plays out on a desert backdrop. It's an ideal setting for the romance between the smiling Shakira and her often-shirtless tennis pro to unfold.

What did you think of Shakira's collaboration with Rascal Flatts? Let us know in the comments below!

Katy Perry, Pitbull, Britney Spears Battle For Summer Jam Crown

Here's our look at early contenders for 2011's Song of the Summer.
By James Montgomery

Well, school's out and summer is officially here, which means it's time to handicap the race for Summer Jam 2011 — the annual sweepstakes of sweaty, sex-drenched (and, this year, sax-heavy) songs that turns our nation's finest beaches and waterfront drinking establishments into an all-out battle for summer-soundtrack superiority.

Last year, it was Katy Perry who emerged victorious, thanks to "California Gurls," her slinky ode to daisy dukes and melting popsicles, and she's back to defend her crown this summer with "Last Friday Night." But she'll face considerable competition from a host of big-name stars — Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj and Adele — each of whom are looking to take home the title. And even if she manages to outgun them, will Perry have enough left in the tank to takedown the suddenly sizzling Pitbull or the unstoppable LMFAO? We'll just have to wait and see.

And with the action just getting under way, here's our up-to-the minute standings in the Song of the Summer Sweepstakes. If there's a song we've missed, you can let us know about it via Twitter, using the hashtag #mtvsos, or in the comments below. So without further ado, let's slather on some sunscreen and get to the jams!

1. Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)": She dominated the summer of 2010 with "California Gurls," and now Perry is out to make it two in a row with the ebullient "T.G.I.F.," the 183rd single from her Teenage Dream album. It currently sits at #4 on Billboard's Hot 100, and it seems like it's only a matter of time before it makes the leap to #1. Call it manifest destiny.

2. Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), "Give Me Everything": Perhaps the only man standing between Perry and her second-straight Song of the Summer crown is the suddenly ubiquitous Pitbull, whose "Give Me Everything" just went to #1 on the Hot 100. It's from his well-received, club-approved Planet Pit album, and its success only validates the fact that the Miami rapper may finally be having his moment.

3. LMFAO (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock), "Party Rock Anthem": Aptly titled hit from America's leading purveyors of sublimely stoopid odes to inebriation, "Party Rock Anthem" is basically the spiritual sequel to all of LMFAO's earlier jams (like "I'm in Miami, Bitch" and "Get Crazy," the theme from MTV's "Jersey Shore") only, you know, times one thousand. Could this be the jam that finally puts them over the top?

4. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass": Ms. Minaj's ode to the guys with the booming systems (and she's not necessarily talking about the ones in their cars), it's breezy, sexy and unspeakably catchy — which means it's a mortal lock to be the soundtrack to a million wet T-shirt contests, only, you know, the ones featuring dudes.

5. Maroon 5 (featuring Christina Aguilera), "Moves Like Jagger": Riding high off the success of NBC's "The Voice," this jam from one-half of the judging panel debuted on the Hot 100 at #8 and seems like it could be poised to go all the way to #1. As a bonus, it's basically about guys who dance like Mick Jagger, and, really, what summertime girl doesn't want someone like that? Also, whistling!

6. Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" (featuring Bruno Mars), "Lighters": Unexpectedly bright single from Em and Royce's decidedly dark Hell: The Sequel EP, it may not seem like a logical Summer Jam, but when you hear the hook (courtesy of Bruno Mars, a guy who knows a thing or two about summertime smashes) and consider the tremendous fanbase Mr. Mathers possesses, you know this one's a contender.

7. Britney Spears, "I Wanna Go": On one hand, it's yet another club-ready jam from Ms. Spears. On the other, it's not as good as "Till the World Ends." Still, with her just-launched tour and a near-constant presence on pop radio, you can bet Britney's not going away anytime soon.

8. Enrique Iglesias (featuring Usher and Lil Wayne), "Dirty Dancer": Iglesias' "I Like It" was a sneaky runner-up to "California Gurls" in the Summer Jam 2010 sweepstakes, and "Dirty Dancer" follows a similarly clubby path. Add hard-working guest appearances from Usher and Wayne — both of whom know a thing or 13 about making hits — and "Dancer" could end up shocking the world this summer.

9. Jason Derülo, "Don't Wanna Go Home": It opens with Derülo aping the "Day-O" chant from "The Banana Boat Song," rolls on a sample of "Show Me Love" and is basically about one never-ending party. Yeah, we wouldn't bet against this one either.

10. Adele, "Rolling in the Deep": Unstoppable lead single from Adele's equally unstoppable 21 album, "Deep" has been with us for a minute now, yet there's the very real feeling that more and more people are discovering it every day. She's already conquered the Billboard charts, but now, could Adele conquer the summer too?

11. Lady Gaga, "The Edge of Glory": Not the most conventional choice, but given the fact that, A) It features a wailing sax solo from the late Clarence Clemons (which, when considered alongside the wailing "T.G.I.F." saxophone majesty, seems to suggest we're currently living in "the summer of sax") and B) It's from Lady Gaga. We wouldn't be surprised to see it take the Summer Jam crown.

12. David Guetta (featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida), "Where Them Girls At": French DJ David Guetta continues his bid to take over the entire universe with this walloping, galloping party starter. Throw in cameos by Flo and Nicki, and you've got all the makings of a certified smash. Equally important, it takes the work out of actually inquiring about the location of females, which makes your summer approximately 75 percent easier already.

13. DJ Khaled (featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne), "I'm On One": A sun-drenched ode to excess in just about every conceivable way, it's a song that sounds best when blasting out of a high-end system. It's got the superstar pedigree and the shelf life (check the ever-growing list of remixes), so who's to say Khaled can't also take home the Summer Jam crown?

14. Chris Brown, "She Ain't You": Built around a sample of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature," it's a smoove, supple jam, equally suited for those late-night make-out sessions and those hazy, lazy days of tanning. A true multipurpose Summer Jam indeed.

15. Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks": Ultra-catchy tune from the Los Angeles-based rock outfit, it's easy and breezy enough to be considered a dark-horse contender, so long as folks don't pay attention to the lyrics, which are dark indeed (it's about a kid and a gun, in case you hadn't noticed). Then again, when it comes to Summer Jams, no one actually listens to the lyrics, do they?

You Told Us: Your Reactions To The Grammy Nominations

Readers share their feelings on who was honored, who was snubbed.
By Joe D'Angelo

Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, and Nelly announce 2003 Grammy nominations
Photo: MTV News

When nominations for the 45th annual Grammy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, reactions ranged from sincere congratulations to "What were they thinking?" (Click here for the list of nominees.)

Few readers writing to MTVNews.com's You Tell Us forum had sour sentiments about demure Norah Jones, the jazz-influenced singer/pianist who's got a chance to sweep the four biggest categories — Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best New Artist (see "Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Norah Jones Nab Most Grammy Noms"). Jones is also among the eight artists who garnered five nominations. (Click for photos of this year's Grammy nominees.)

"I'm sooo happy for [Norah Jones]," wrote 18-year-old Lexi, from Seattle. "I know many people haven't heard her music, but those who have know how great it is. Big ups to the critics for giving this girl the credit she deserves."

Jones' Come Away With Me faces stiff competition from The Rising, Bruce Springsteen's return to form, and, to a lesser extent, The Eminem Show. Although the mainstream seems to have embraced the volatile rapper, with hardly a protest over his third major-label album or his fictionalized biopic "8 Mile," the Grammys might not be ready to bestow such a prestigious honor to a man who had a hit with a song that talks about killing the mother of his child and stuffing her in a trunk.

Then again, Eminem already has five golden gramophones in his trophy case (though none in the big four categories), and the Recording Academy did grant an Album of the Year Grammy to Steely Dan in 2001, for Two Against Nature, which featured the song "Cousin Dupree," about incest. But old guards like Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have always had Grammy odds in their favor, which is why Springsteen stands such a good shot. And even if The Eminem Show doesn't win for Album of the Year and "Without Me" doesn't lay claim to Record of the Year, Eminem is likely to make good on at least one of his other three nominations.

While Jones stands as the artist with the smallest presence at radio compared with fellow new-artist nominees R&B songbird Ashanti, singer/songwriter Michelle Branch, sensitive guy John Mayer and pop-rocker Avril Lavigne, most of you think the latter stands as her fiercest competition.

"I think Avril Lavigne definitely deserves Best New Artist," wrote 14-year-old Ashley of Thief River Falls, Minnesota. "She's worked so hard and accomplished so much this year."

"There is no doubt that Avril Lavigne should win Best New Artist," echoed 14-year-old Danielle, from Somerset, New Jersey. "She writes her own music, had three top 40 songs in 2002, sold over 4 million copies of her debut, Let Go, and hates Britney Spears. What more could you want in a Best New Artist?"

While statistics may garner gold records, they don't necessarily translate to a Grammy. Awards are (theoretically) doled out to those who demonstrate genuine artistry in their work. And that's Avril Lavigne, isn't it?

"Avril has no business being nominated for as much as she was," disagreed 19-year-old Andrea. "As far as music and creativity go, Britney is more creative — and you know that's a stretch, especially since Britney is nothing but manufactured bubble gum. Avril may have had something going with her and her ties but let's face it, MTV, that's all she has had."

After yesterday's announcement of the nominations, Lavigne has a lot more attached to her, namely a monumental mistake when she mispronounced David Bowie's last name. When reading the list of artists up for the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, she mispronounced Bowie as "bow-wie" (rhymes with oh, wowee!). An unnerving hush immediately enveloped Madison Square Garden.

"Am I the only person who realizes what a poser Avril Lavigne is?" queried 22-year-old Kim, from Denver. "First of all, she botched the pronunciation of David Bowie, one of the most influential musicians of our time. ... Does Avril know anything about music? ... My point is, although everyone seems to be touting Avril Lavigne as some new prodigy, the fact is that she is not a true musician or artist and is just as fake and untalented as Britney Spears."

And here we thought Avril was the anti-Britney.

While Mayer's the only guy among the gals in the Best New Artist pack, his fans warn not to count him out just because he's outnumbered.

"John Mayer deserves to win the Grammy for Best New Artist," declared 18-year-old Tiffany Johnson, from Austin, Texas. "He is just on a different level from the rest of the nominees. The guy is brilliant."

Nelly, who's up for Album of the Year, Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album honors, among others, is feeling the brunt of haters. For the nearly 5 million copies of Nellyville sold, the St. Louis rapper seems to have just as many, if not more, detractors.

"I want to know what the Grammy folks see in Nelly," demanded 19-year-old Jason Curtis of Seattle. "Everyone is hypnotized by his so-called 'skills,' which are by no means good. As far as I'm concerned, Nelly doesn't deserve a Grammy."

It wasn't all trash talk directed at the St. Louis rapper, however. Many have their fingers crossed that the Band-Aid bearing MC will leave with even more gold than he came in with.

"I'm really anticipating seeing Nelly take home the Grammy for best album," wrote 14-year-old Linzi, from Sandusky, Michigan. "I mean, his music is totally hot, and I'm pretty sure that I don't know anyone who isn't into Nelly."

Linzi, meet 21-year-old James, from New Haven, Connecticut.

"It is clear once again that the awards honor what is popular, not what is good," James began. "Nelly has sunk so far down in the talent pool that he's left rapping about sneakers and some sort of heat wave that has apparently swept Nellyville. Talk about meaningless music. Seriously, if it's that hot in 'herre,' then drink a glass of water. Don't make a freakin' song about it."

Fellow hip-hopper Petey Pablo, up for Best Rap Album with Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry, faced some harsh reactions, with fellow nominee Mystikal also catching some heat.

"I am very upset to see that Pete Pablo has been nominated for Best Rap Album," expressed 25-year-old Curtis, from Tallahassee, Florida. "Also, Mystikal's Tarantula album was very disappointing. How come someone like Trick Daddy or Cee-Lo never gets nominated? He is pure trash, and I understand why people like Jay-Z protest the Grammys. If we want to make it mainstream for all these old white people, let's nominate Will Smith. Even though his album sold probably 200 copies, he does not curse."

Such outrage over those who were nominated couldn't rival the furor over those who were left out: uber-producers the Neptunes and anyone from the neo-garage school, such as the Hives, the Vines, the Strokes or the White Stripes.

"How did Dr. Dre get nominated in the Producer of the Year category, while the Neptunes were ignored?" wondered Venni, 18, from Blacksburg, Virginia. "Dre didn't do anything in 2002. Every single song on the radio was produced by the Neptunes."

OK, Venni may be exaggerating a bit, though Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are responsible for Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You," Nelly's "Hot in Herre" and Mystikal's "Bouncin' Back (Bumpin' Me Against the Wall)," all of which are Grammy-nominated.

"I'm surprised the new 'the' bands didn't get major nods," typed an aghast CJ, 18, from Newmarket, New Hampshire. "I'm sad that the White Stripes were shafted, when overrated Avril Lavigne gets all the credit. Well, the Grammys are pretty lame either way."

If the nominations aroused such fervent feelings in these folks, they'd better be prepared for the shock of February 23. While some surprises can be expected with the nods, utter jaw-droppers like the over-the-hill Jethro Tull winning for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 1988 are unmatched.

Stay tuned and stay calm.

Alicia Keys Tries To Lock Out Amy Winehouse, Spice Girls, Killers, Hives And More, In New Releases

Also due Tuesday: Now 26, Eminem, AFI, Duran Duran, Wire, Babyshambles, Led Zeppelin, Dillinger Escape Plan.

Happy International Phone Dictionary Day! Here's the 411 on this week's New Releases ...

All About Her: Not many 27-year-olds can say they've single-handedly sold 20 million albums worldwide and racked up nine Grammy Awards. But Alicia Keys can. Still, the singer/songwriter is only three albums into her career, so she's still got some searching to do. As she recently told MTV News, her new album, As I Am, chronicles her attempt at "becoming a better person." Keys had a hand in writing each song that appears on the disc, with John Mayer, Linda Perry and others stepping up with a few assists. And fans might want to go the iTunes route, as that edition of As I Am comes with two bonus tracks: "Waiting for Your Love" and "Hurt So Bad."

Soul Survivor: Keys also said, in a recent press release, that her new album is "Janis Joplin meets Aretha Franklin," and fittingly, the Queen of Soul returns this week too. Jewels in the Crown: All-Star Duets With the Queen doesn't involve Miss Alicia, but with two new duets — with John Legend and Fantasia — placed alongside vintage collaborations with Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and others, the disc certainly lives up to its title.

A Younger Look: Like Aretha, Duran Duran are looking outward to give their new music some fresh new appeal — the new-wave pioneers are aiming for a younger demo by tapping Justin Timberlake, and producers Timbaland and Danjahandz, for their new album. Red Carpet Massacre was finished after guitarist Andy Taylor split from the band for the second time, in 2005, and for more on the making of the disc, look no further than the bonus DVD that comes with deluxe editions of the package. It also features extra artwork, a 16-page foldout booklet and, for what it's worth, a press badge sticker.

Hives Break Out: Timbaland almost doubled up on the rock this week, actually — he also recently teamed with the Hives, although none of their efforts came to fruition on the band's fourth studio LP, The Black and White Album. Still, the Swedes got their hip-hop fix by also partnering with Pharrell — as frontman Pelle Almqvist told MTV News a couple of months ago, the idea was "too interesting not to do it." "Well All Right!" and "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S." represent the Hives/Pharrell hookup, while The Black and White Album also features "Square One Here I Come," "You Dress Up for Armageddon" and more.

From the Cutting-Room Floor: The Killers have a secret weapon of their own this week in rock legend Lou Reed. The Las Vegas band took a gamble by holing up at a studio in New York's Hell's Kitchen, coaxing the hometown hero to come along for "Tranqulize," a song featured on the Killers' new odds-and-sods collection, Sawdust. The disc is saturated with additional unreleased leftovers from previous recording sessions, B-sides, soundtrack contributions and more.

Whole Lotta Led: With Led Zeppelin's reunion concert only a few weeks away, the rock gods are loading up the record bins with a pile of new releases. The best-of collection Mothership, a revitalized version of their concert flick "Song Remains the Same" and a two-CD deluxe edition of the soundtrack for it are all happening this week, in a bunch of different configurations. Devoted fans will want to get their hands on two collector's editions in particular: The Mothership one has a bonus DVD of live footage, from the 2003 "Led Zeppelin" DVD; and the limited-edition collector's version of the "Songs" DVD comes with the spiffed-up soundtrack, a vintage T-shirt, lobby cards and more.

Girls! Girls! Girls!: While Zeppelin's comeback has the rock masses frothing, bubble-gum pop fans are going gaga over the Spice Girls' new world tour!!!, which begins December 2 in Vancouver, British Columbia. In case its "girl power" theme didn't alienate all the guys out there, the group is making sure to do so by selling its new Greatest Hits collection exclusively at Victoria's Secret stores — well, until January 15, anyway, when bolstered editions of the album go into wide release. The Victoria's Secret version glistens with two newly recorded songs, the single "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" and "Voodoo," and provides online access to three downloadable bonus remixes. Next year's deluxe edition will have a DVD with all the Girls' promo videos, while the gift-box version will also contain a karaoke disc and gift bracelet. All the more "power" to 'em.

Now Again: In the event that you have newer pop songs stuck in your head, you can listen to them to exhaustion via Now That's What I Call Music! 26, which is littered with the latest from Justin, Rihanna, Kanye, Fergie and other radio regulars. The Last Goodnight, Plain White T's and Daughtry, meanwhile, rep the rock on the 20-track disc.

A/V Center: If you're in the market for some smokin' concert DVDs instead of boring old straight CDs, this is your week.

· Shakira's "Oral Fixation Tour" set scoops up highlights from 17 shows on her recent worldwide trek of the same name, including performances of "Hips Don't Lie" with Wyclef Jean and "La Tortura" with Alejandro Sanz. The standard bonus CD has five of the songs from the video, while the one Wal-Mart is selling has two extra live tracks from the disc. The video also has a five-minute around-the-world-in-397-days clip as well as a feature that sheds light on Shakira's outreach efforts helping children in Colombia.

· From "health issues" to a pot bust to visa troubles to an alleged trial-fixing plot involving her husband, it's been a rough year for Amy Winehouse. But she's trying to underscore the high points with a new DVD that showcases her show at Shepherds Bush Empire earlier this year. "I Told You I Was Trouble: Live in London" — which has one of the more fitting titles in recent memory — also has an interview with her father, Mitch; a 50-minute documentary; additional unreleased performances; and behind-the-scenes clips.

· Winehouse isn't the only British star with big problems — just look at Pete Doherty. His Babyshambles also have a new DVD this week: "Live in Manchester," which captures one of the garage band's earliest concerts. The 90-minute disc finds Doherty dabbling with Libertines songs and other unreleased tracks, in addition to behind-the-scenes hijinks.

· And Eminem, who doesn't have all that much else in common with any of the artists mentioned above, is cleaning out his closet with a new concert DVD too: "Live in New York City." The hour-and-a-half disc immortalizes his 2005 Madison Square Garden gig, for which he was joined by D12, Obie Trice and Stat Quo. Among the 28 performances are "Evil Deeds," "Like Toy Soldiers" and a cover of Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang."

Song Title of the Week:

"Gummy From Bom Bom Bay" from Gummibär's I Am Your Gummy Bear

Album Cover of the Week:

Streetlight Manifesto's Somewhere in the Between

Other Notables:

The Dillinger Escape Plan's Ire Works
The mathcore band has been around for 10 years and released more than a half-dozen EPs in that time but, until now, has only had two full-lengths to its name. This effort is Dillinger's first without founding drummer Chris Pennie, who was later replaced by (+44) collaborator Gil Sharone, but they tried to meet their karma quota by roping in ex-bandmate Dimitri Minakakis for one of the tracks, "Horse Hunter." Mastodon guitarist/singer Brent Hinds also steps into the fold, performing vocals on "Fix Your Face," while the band barrels through "Milk Lizard," "When Acting as a Particle" and other tracks all by itself.

Wire's Read & Burn 03
Post-punk fans are probably finished reveling in Send, Wire's 2003 comeback album, but they'll be happy to know that the group is cranking out another release for next year. In the meantime, aficionados can tide themselves over with a 26-minute disc that has such unforgettable Wire lyrics as "Rhizomic gastropods interweave slender tails/ Grey hairs genuflect as perforated anarchists" (on "23 Years Too Late"). The disc also contains "Our Time," "No Warning Given" and "Desert Diving," and none of the songs will be resurfacing on next year's studio LP.

Brian Dewan's Words of Wisdom
This isn't your average singer/songwriter: The New Yorker is also a former furniture salesman; has made album art for Neutral Milk Hotel and They Might Be Giants; and also has an instrument to call his own — the analog "Dewanatron," which he created with his brother. Dewan also employed autoharp, electric zither, organ and the accordion for "The Devil Made Texas," "The Big Rock Candy Mountain," "Carve That Possum" and other folk compositions that appear on his latest disc.
