When Jordin Sparks was 17, she was constantly singing — which might explain why she nabbed the "American Idol" crown that same year. The pop star discusses her continuous crooning in the latest episode of "When I Was 17," which airs Saturday (August 21) at 11 a.m. ET.

"I loved school, but I always wanted to be out singing," Sparks says. Her brother, PJ, notes that his sister has always preferred to express herself musically. "She was always singing," PJ said. "Before she even could talk she could sing."

"I was that one in school that just was always looking at the clock, like, wishing I was kind of somewhere else. I was always singing in class, too. Like I'd be reading the assignments and singing and the teacher would be like, 'Jordin, Jordin, Jordin!' I'd be like, 'What?' She's like, 'Shh! People are reading!' and I was like, 'Oh, sorry.'

The "Idol" champ released her self-titled debut album in 2007 and followed it up with Battlefield in 2009. On Thursday, she made her Broadway debut in the hit musical "In The Heights."

The multi-talented star says she kept a diverse array of friends in high school.

"I was very quirky, bubbly, that loud girl. I wasn't a part of one clique or anything. I guess it would be called a floater," Sparks says. "I loved making friends with all different people. It didn't matter what they looked like [or] where they came from."

"When I Was 17" airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV.
